In a tragic development, 3 IIT students were among the 7 tourists who were killed after a vehicle fell into a Himachal Pradesh gorge. Further, 10 others tourists were reported injured in the aftermath of the accident that has sent waves of shock across the hill state.

As per reports, the vehicle, a tempo traveller, was travelling with 17 tourists all across Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and other states when it skidded off the path near Jalori Pass and fell into a gorge. It is being suspected that the accident took place due to heavy rain and poor visibility.

The accident took place earlier on Sunday last week, and the bodies of the five accident victims were retrieved earlier on Tuesday morning. While some of the injured were rushed to the Banjar Hospital, others were taken to the Kullu-based zonal hospitals. During treatment, two travelers succumbed to their injuries.

The deceased have been identified as Saurabh, Priyanka Gupta, Kiran, Rishab Raj, Aditya, and Anshika Jain,Kullu SP Gurdev Sharma told media. Meanwhile, injured include, Rahul, Kshitija, Ishan Gupta, Ajay Chauhan, Nishtha Badoni, and more.

Following the accident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and tweeted a condolence message. Anurag Thakur, Union Home Minister, who is a MP from Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh, also expressed his shock and grief.

The Facts of the Matter

According to official data, Himachal Pradesh reported the highest cases of road accidents among all three hill states in 2021. With a shocking average of three deaths every day, the scenic valley of Himachal Pradesh echoes back the sounds of shrieks, breaking bones, and wails of all the people killed by nature’s wrath or their own missteps.

3 Deceased Students from IIT

In a similar instance, 7 people were killed and 10 people were reported to be injured after a bus fell into a gorge in Himachal’s Kullu. Among the 7 accident victims, it is now being reported that 3 travelers were from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology.

The Accident As It Happened

According to reports, the tourists belonged to various states including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and were traveling in a Tempo Traveller. As the vehicle was crossing the Jalori pass in Kullu’s Banjar subdivision, it skidded off the road and fell into a gorge.

While the actual cause of accident is still unconfirmed, officials are suspecting that low-visibility and incessant rainfall could have led the vehicle to skid off the road.

Complicated Rescue Mission

The accident took place earlier last week on Sunday, and the bodies of the deceased were retrieved sometime on Tuesday. The administration had a tough time retrieving the bodies of the injured and the deceased due to conditions. Further, the rescue mission for injured became even more complicated as the vehicle was completely mangled.

Earlier, a Banjar Surender MLA took to Facebook and streamed a video informing about the accident on Monday, 12.45 am. In the video, the BJP MLA mentioned that the injured were rushed to the Banjar hospital and were then referred to the Kullu regional hospital. He also informed that the locals contributed in the rescue operation despite the darkness and tough conditions.

PM Modi, Union Minister Anurag Thakur Express Grief

Following the incident, Prime Minister Modi took to Twitter and shared a condolence message. “The incident of a tourist vehicle falling into a ditch in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh is very sad. I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones in this accident. Along with this, all possible help is being provided to the injured. I wish them a speedy recovery”, his tweet read.

“The accident which took place due to the overturning of the traveler bus near Ghiyagi on Aut-Luhri NH-305 in Kullu is very sad. My condolences to the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery. May God give place to the departed souls at His feet,” tweeted Union Minister Anurag Thakur.
