Foldable smartphones are no more a thing of future. They are already here. There have been rumours and leaks from around the world for years about foldable smartphones. But no more guessing, the future of mobile phone technology is here. You can now actually buy folding smartphones.

For years there have been viral videos on YouTube and viral blogs on the internet, telling us about how the future folding smartphones will be and how they will famish the people around the users. But these top mobile companies have made folding smartphones a reality before many big players in the industry. 

A foldable smartphone allows access to a larger tablet-like display or a phablet when needed by unfolding the device. It maintains a similar footprint and functionality to a standard smartphone when folded (typically along a vertical axis). The screen can be folded to either wrap around to the back of the device or use a booklet-like design where the larger, folded screen is located on the interior. 

In a first Samsung has become the first major smartphone making company in the world to have officially announced and launched its first foldable smartphone, Samsung Galaxy Fold. Here is a description of Samsung’s Fold & other top foldable smartphones, launched in 2019.

1. Samsung Galaxy Fold (Inside Fold)

The first-ever foldable smartphone cum tablet or foldable phablet by Samsung, the all-new Samsung Galaxy Fold was launched worldwide on February 2019. It has a 7.30-inch touchscreen primary display (unfolded mode) with a resolution of 1536×2152 pixels. It is backed by a 4.60-inch touchscreen as its secondary display, with a resolution of 840×1960 pixels which works in the folded mode. 

The phone is powered by an octa-core processor, has a 12GB RAM & 512 GB of internal storage. It comes with a pre-installed Android Pie which can be upgraded as the updates arrive. Backed by a 4,380mAh battery, Samsung Galaxy Fold has wireless charging support as well as Quick Charge 2.0 fast charging.

The Samsung Galaxy fold has a triple camera setup packed with a 16-megapixel primary camera (f/F2.2), a second 12-megapixel camera (f/F1.5-2.4) and a third 12-megapixel camera (f/F2.4). In front, it has a 10-megapixel (f2.2) camera for selfies.

It comes with connectivity options including Wi-Fi, GPS, and USB Type-C. The galaxy fold comes in four colour variants; Space Silver, Cosmos Black, and Martian Green and Astro Blue colours. 2. Huawei Mate X (Outside Fold)

Launched in February 2019, Huawei Mate X smartphone is the Huwaei’s first foldable smartphone. The primary touchscreen display is 6.60-inch with a resolution of 1148×2480 pixels while the secondary one is 6.38-inch with a resolution of 892×2480 pixels. The unfolded display comes at an 8.00-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 2200×2480 pixels.

Powered by a 1.8GHz octa-core Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 980 processor (2 x 2.6GHz, 2 x 1.92GHz and 4 x 1.8GHz). The phone further has an 8GB of RAM & 512 GB of internal storage (further 256Gb expandable). Huawei Mate X comes with a pre-installed Android 9.0 Pie, which can be upgraded. The 4500mAh battery system supports proprietary fast charging. It is a 5G technology phone that comes with the official Balong 5000 technology.

Huawei Mate X too has a triple camera setup packed with a 40-megapixel primary camera; a second 16-megapixel camera and a third 8-megapixel camera with a selfie camera at the front. The phone runs on Huawei’s EMUI 9.1.1 based on Android 9.0. 

Huawei Mate X’s connectivity options includes Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS, Bluetooth v5.00, NFC, USB Type-C, 3G, and 4G. Further, it comes with inbuilt tools like accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, compass/ magnetometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, and fingerprint sensor. 

It measures 161.30 x 78.30 x 11.00mm (height x width x thickness) and weighs 295.00 grams & was launched in Interstellar Blue colour.

3. Microsoft Surface Duo

Expected to be available for sale by the holiday season in the year 2020, Surface Duo is Microsoft’s first dual-screen foldable phone. Unlike the former two members of the list, this phone does not support a foldable screen but has two separate screens, connected through a hinge, that allows the screen to be folded inside & outside. Thus giving it a 360-degree hinge. 

Microsoft announced this phone in its hardware technology event 2019. Unlike prior Microsoft phone’s which were based on Window’s OS, the Microsoft Surface Duo will be based on an Android OS. Each of the two sides by side displays is 5.6 inch in size. Microsoft has partnered with Google to make enable dual-screen interface from Android OS, specifically designed for the device. 

Although there have not been many declarations about the battery, processor, camera apparatus, storage, RAM, price, colours and other specifications, the phone is expected to be officially launched in 2020.

4. Mi Mix Alpha

Xiaomi has pushed its Mi Mix line of smartphones towards newer possibilities of the phone design. Mi Mix Alpha is the Chinese phone manufacturer’s first foldable/ wraparound or ‘surround’ display smartphone. The most unique thing about Mi Mix Alpha or Mi Mix Fold is that it has a 180.6% screen-to-body ratio. Which means that 180.6% of the whole phone, including the back, has displayed, leaving 19.4% of the phone for the body.

Powered by a Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset together with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of UFS 3.0 storage, Mi Mix Alpha or Mi Mix Fold supports a, 4050 nano silicone cathode power cell and has a 40W wired fast-charging support. 

The new titanium alloy body is lightweight as well as 1.3 1.3 times stronger than the 7-series aluminium alloy. Mi Mix Flex or Mi Mix Alpha does not have any physical side buttons but has pressure-sensitive areas combined with a linear motor simulate that gives the touch of real buttons. Also, there are no speakers on the phone and it uses ‘Display Acoustic Technology’ to produce sound.

Mi Mix Alpha is said to have a customized 108MP camera module with Samsung’s ultra-high-resolution primary camera sensor (f/1.69) plus four-axis OIS & is capable of 8K video recording. The other two lenses have a 20MP ultra wide-angle camera (f/2.2) & a 12MP telephoto camera (f/2). The whole camera apparatus is protected by a sapphire glass.

The phone comes with a 5G support. It will be up for sale from December 2019 with only a limited number of units as Xiaomi has labelled it as a concept smartphone. Since the phone belongs to the most unique category of smartphones and is the most unique in its category, it is priced at a hefty sum of approximately Rs 2,00,000.

5. Motorola Razr 2019

The first-ever folding phone by Motorola, Motorola Razr 2019 smartphone has a basic design inspired by the former Motorola Razer Phone which was a big success. It runs on Android v9.0 (Pie) & is powered by Octa-core (2.2 GHz, Dual-core, Kryo 360 + 1.7 GHz, Hexa Core, Kryo 360) processor backed by Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 Chipset. Initially announced with a 4 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage.

The IPS LCD can be folded & has a screen resolution of 876 x 2142 pixels and 373 PPI pixel density. The camera setup includes 8 MP Front Camera with a 12 MP rear camera. The primary camera supports features like Digital Zoom, Auto Flash, Face detection, Touch to focus. It is backed by a 2730 mAh battery. It supports connectivity features including WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, Volte, and more.

The smartphone price in India is likely to be Rs 69,990 & rumoured to be launched in the country on December 5, 2019 (Unofficial).
