As many as 6 locations related to Bollywood actor Sonu Sood came under Income Tax department’s ‘survey’ on September 15. According to reports, the actor is facing the scrutiny of the IT department for allegedly evading taxes. The surveys are being carried at multiple locations connected to Sood in Mumbai as well as Lucknow.
The news comes just a few weeks after Delhi government announced that Sood will be the face of Delhi’s Mentorship program called the “Desh Ke Mentor”. It should also be noted that earlier last week, the income tax department conducted similar surveys on News Laundry.
‘Raids by I-T department’ is a headline that an Indian common man has gotten quite used to, especially in this day and age. In the past few years, several celebrities, journalists and organizations have faced scrutiny by the apex tax body.
From Anurag Kashyap and Taapsee Pannu, to media conglomerate Dainik Bhaskar, raids are getting more common by the day. On September 15, one more celebrity found himself being caught in the tax evasion storm.
The Facts of the Matter
Actor turned philanthropist Sonu Sood is under scrutiny of the I-T department. According to reports, as many as 6 locations associated with Sood are under a ‘survey’ being conducted by the I-T department. According to an NDTV report, the IT department is conducting a survey on a recent deal between Sood’s company and a real estate firm. While the official word from the I-T department is still awaited, it’s being reported that the survey is carried on tax evasion allegation.
The Sonu Sood – AAP – IT Survey Connnection
Sood, who’s often in news for his massive philanthropic gestures, earlier last month made the buzz for a different reason. The actor announced that he will be joining forces with the Aam Aadmi Party by being the brand ambassador of the party’s flagship mentorship programme.
For about a year, people were speculating whether or not Sood is using his philantropic venture as a platform to jump into politics. When he announced that he will be joining forces with AAP, it became clear that his entry into the political landscape is not so far.
However, the actor went on to quash such rumours by claiming that he has no plans of venturing into politics. “As of now, we have not discussed anything political because this issue (education and mentorship) is even bigger than that and this is above all,” he said, as quoted by News18. Delhi CM and AAP leader Kejriwal also reiterated Sood’s notion.
While Sood pointed out to not joining politics, him joining AAP and now facing an I-T department ‘survey’ paints an interesting picture.
I-T Surveys on Newslaundry, Newsclick
It should be noted that earlier last week, the I-T department conducted multiple such ‘surveys’ on the premises of Newslaundry and NewsClick.
According to reports, the surveys were carried on charges of tax evasion. After the incident, Abhinandan Sekhari, the co-founder of Newslaundry issued a statement.

The Dainik Bhaskar I-T Raid
Earlier in July this year, media conglomerate Dainik Bhaskar faced raids from the I-T department as well. As many as 32 Dainik Bhaskar premises across the nation were raided by the I-T department. The authorities claimed that Danik Bhaskar were facing the raids for tax evasion. A few days after the raids, it was revealed by the I-T department that the group had evaded taxes up to Rs. 700 crores.
