Beloved soap opera actor Tyler Christopher, best known for his role as Nikolas Cassadine on ABC’s General Hospital, has died at the age of 50.

The news was first shared on Instagram by his General Hospital co-star Maurice Benard. According to Benard, Christopher died following a cardiac event at his home in San Diego. Christopher’s representative Chi Muoi Lo confirmed his passing to media outlets, stating that his death was “incredibly shocking” and a devastating loss.
Prolific Soap Opera Career
Christopher had a prolific career in daytime television. He first joined General Hospital in 1996, portraying Nikolas Cassadine. He quickly became a fan favorite and ended up playing the role on and off for nearly 20 years until 2016. His performance earned him a Daytime Emmy Award in 2004.
In addition to General Hospital, Christopher played the role of Connor Bishop on Days of Our Lives in 2004-2005. He returned to daytime TV in 2018 on Days of Our Lives as Stefan DiMera, a role which won him his second Daytime Emmy in 2019.

As news of Christopher’s untimely passing spread, he was remembered fondly by friends and colleagues. General Hospital’s executive producer Frank Valentini said in a statement, “I am heartbroken over the news of Tyler Christopher’s passing. He was kind, an incredible actor, and dear friend, who was beloved by our GH family and fans of Nikolas Cassadine.”
Maurice Benard also noted in his Instagram post that Christopher was open about his struggles with mental health and addiction issues. “Tyler was an advocate for better mental health and substance use treatment who openly spoke about his struggles with bipolar depression and alcohol,” Benard wrote.
