Recently, India’s golden boy Neeraj Chopra has been on the receiving end of some bizarre questions and interview moments.

Earlier last month, the 23-year-old athlete clinched the first ever gold medal in javelin throw and the only gold in Tokyo Olympics for India. Since then, he has been seen giving interviews and making public appearances.

Voyeuristic Attitude of Indian Media Towards Athletes

Indian athletes and sportspersons have always been on the receiving end of extremes. If and when they perform poorly, their effigies are burnt and they are widely criticized.

But when they perform well, they are given a warm returning reception and are invited to interviews and appearances to share their experience.

However, some of these interviewees blur the line of a professional interview watched by millions and a casual conversation privy to none.

Neeraj Chopra’s String of Uncomfortable Moments

Most interviews Neeraj gives are uneventful. He answers the questions with the experience of an Olympian and the innocence of a 23-year-old small town boy. But some interviews are cringe worthy and borderline unprofessional. In such interviews, Neeraj is left with his presence of mind and yet, can be seen visibly uncomfortable.

Rajeev Sethi Puts Chopra in Tough Spot

In one such instance, Neeraj was invited to an Indian Express interview event. While the event started off well, it soon derailed when art historian Rajeev Sethi asked him about his sex life. Sethi first complimented Chopra on his looks and said, “What a handsome young man you are!”

Then the 72-year-old historian asked Chopra, “How do you maintain balance between your sex life and athletic training? I know it’s a weird question,” Sethi asked. Stupified by the bizzarre question, Chopra recollected his thoughts and just said “Sorry sir”.

When Sethi further tried to dig deeper, Chopra put the nail in the matter and said, “I have said sorry, you can know my answer from that.”

Realizing that he may have crossed a boundary, Sethi tried apologizing for his question to which Chopra with a composed smile on his face, “My heart is overwhelmed by your question.”

RJ Malishka’s Cringe Performance for Chopra

It should be noted that this was not the first time Chopra was made to sit during an awkward interview. Earlier, popular radio personality RJ Malishka gave Internet a daily dose of cringe when she gave a dance performance for Chopra.

Chopra, who was on a virtual interview with Malishka was flabbergasted when Malishka, along with her team, danced for Chopra. The RJ and her peers danced on ‘Ude Jab Jab Zulfein Teri’, a reference to the athlete’s long hair. Throughout the performance, Chopra kept a smile on his face, but looked visibly uncomfortable.

Soon, the netizens took Malishka up to task and panned her on social media. Some netizens blamed her for trying to hog the limelight, while others just commented on how uncomfortable the ordeal was.

Times Now’s Navika Labelled ‘Gossip Aunty’ by Netizens

Popular journalist and a less-aggressive counterpart of Arnab Goswami Navika too was slammed by netizens for putting Chopra on a tough spot. In an interview, Navika asked Chopra about his relationships status and whether he has a partner or not.

Soon, she was condemned on social media by the masses unanimously.
