After massive layoffs reported from Amazon and Twitter, Google CEO Sundar Pichai in an email confirmed that the company’s parent Alphabet will lay off as many as 12,000 jobs. The development comes amid daily reports of tech giants laying off workforce due to economic uncertainty and increasing concerns about another period of grueling recession.

After years of exponential growth and a never-ending cycle of hiring and recruiting, Google has joined slew of companies that have recently conducted massive layoffs or made announcement of doing so in near future. In his email, Pichai confirmed that the layoffs will be on global level, and added that he is “deeply sorry” for the situation.

The development comes after it was reported that Google is delaying bonuses for its employees. “I have some difficult news to share. We’ve decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles. We’ve already sent a separate email to employees in the US who are affected. In other countries, this process will take longer due to local laws and practices,” Pichai in his email said.

“I am confident about the huge opportunity in front of us thanks to the strength of our mission”, Pichai said, adding that the job cuts will be “across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels and regions”.

The Facts of the Matter

Gone are the days when big tech was looked as a stable environment for incredible opportunity and astounding outcomes. Due to geo-political tensions, economic uncertainty, and the general concerns around a grueling recession, several tech companies, large and small, are laying off a huge part of their work force.

It all started with Elon Musk acquiring Twitter and laying off half of the company’s work force. Soon, major tech companies like Meta, Amazon and Microsoft announced laying off thousands of people from its workforce.

“Take full responsibility” Sundar Pichai on Layoffs

On Friday, it was reported that Google parent Alphabet will be laying off 6% of its workforce, which would amount to as many as 12,000 employees. The update came after Sundar Pichai shared an email, taking responsibility of the massive tech purge.

“I have some difficult news to share. We’ve decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles. We’ve already sent a separate email to employees in the US who are affected. In other countries, this process will take longer due to local laws and practices,” Pichai said in his email.

“The fact that these changes will impact the lives of Googlers weighs heavily on me, and take full responsibility for the decisions that led us here,” the 50-year-old CEO of tech giant Google said.

Who Will Be Impacted Due to Layoffs

Pichai said that he remains confident about the “huge opportunity” he has in front of the company thanks to the company’s mission, products and services, and their early investments.

“..we’ve undertaken a rigorous review across product areas and functions to ensure that our people and roles are aligned with our highest priorities as a company. The roles we’re eliminating reflect the outcome of that review. They cut across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels and regions,” he added.

Severance Package, Notification Period Pay to be Paid

Pichai in the email also confirmed that the company will pay employees during the notification period, and will offer a severance package at 16 weeks salary per two weeks for every year spent at Google.  “We’ll pay 2022 bonuses and remaining vacation time. We’ll be offering 6 months of healthcare, job placement services, and immigration support for those affected,” he added.
