Anupam Mittal’s Ego was hurt on Shark Tank India. Shaadi.com CEO Anupam Mittal admitted that his ego was hurt when BharatPe Co-founder and Managing Director Ashneer Grover undermined him on Shark Tank India.

Grover pulled Mittal’s leg by saying that unlike Anupam, he managed to build three businesses till now. He added that brand building isn’t a lesson that he needs. Later on, Mittal confessed that his ego was hurt due to Ashneer Grover’s sudden attack.

For the unversed Shark Tank India an Indianized version of the popular American reality show that has been running since 2009 and it is gaining more and more popularity in India. In his interview, the speculation of the show being scripted was also smashed by Anupam Mittal.

Ashneer Pulling Mittal’s Legs

Ashneer Grover, co-founder and managing director of Bharat Pe, while convincing a contestant to choose him as an investor over Anupam Mittal, said he has more experience in building brands because he has built three brands while Anupam has only one.

Ashneer said, “Isne ek brand banaya, maine do brand banaye. Maine BharatPe bhi banaya, maine PostPe bhi banaya, pehle maine Grofers bhi banaya, toh brand ki toh baat mat karo mere se (He built just one brand, whereas I built BharatPe, PostPe and before that, I built Grofers. So don’t try to teach me about building a brand).”

Mittal’s Confession of his Ego Being Hurt

In an Interview with Siddharth Kannan, Anupam Mittal confessed about his Ego Being hurt. When asked about that particular episode by the host, Mittal said, “See, if I say no, I will be lying. Ego is a part of your normal reaction. If someone says something to you, you are bound to react. How you act on your reaction depends on you. You might feel, ‘How could he say this?’ But you need to understand if it is your ego, intellect, emotion or conditioning speaking. These four are very different things. Over time, I have learnt that. I analyse carefully.”

Mittal’s Instant Comeback

Mittal further added, “After a minute, I understood that there is a difference between building a brand and advertising. I told him on the show, ‘Anyone can spend on advertising. When your brand is known in every home for 15-20 years, that is an achievement. Talk to me once you build that.’ I said it on the show, I am not saying it behind his back. When you tell yourself that, you understand, ‘People will tell you anything to feel better, it doesn’t mean…’ You can only be put down if you allow yourself to be put down. I don’t give anybody that privilege.”

Is the Show Scripted?

In Shark Tank India, budding entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to a panel of ‘sharks’ for investment. If multiple ‘sharks’ are interested in a business, there’s a bidding war between them.

On the allegations of the show being scripted, Mittal said the organisers don’t let him eat before the long shoots as most entrepreneurs come with food companies. “When you are hungry, you are likely to invest more money,” he added.
