What led to such a horrific incident?

On Tuesday afternoon, Assam’s COVID-19 facility – Udali Model Hospital – was where Dr. Seuj Kumar Senapaty was on duty. The same day, Giyaz Uddin, COVID-19 patient from Pipal Pukhuri, succumbed to the infection and died.

Angered with the death, the family of the patient launched an attack at the hospital. While most of the frontline workers managed to flee the site, it was Dr. Senapaty who chose to lock himself in the room as he was not able to flee. However, he could not keep the angry mob away for a long time and eventually, the mob entered the room and launched the assault.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Senapaty, who is currently in stable condition, said-

“The attendant of the patient came to me saying the patient is serious and has not passed urine since morning. I went to the room and found that the patient was dead. As I broke the news to the attendant, another relative started abusing me.”

Dr. Senapaty further added that there were around 30 people who attacked him and said-

“They ransacked the hospital, we (the staff) ran for safety. I entered a room and tried to hide but they found me and assaulted me. They snatched my gold chain, my ring and my mobile,”
