At least 20 people were killed and many more were injured in a catastrophic event when a bus transporting pilgrims to Mecca collided on a bridge and caught fire. Reports indicated that the bus crashed into a bridge, overturned, and burst into flames due to a malfunctioning brake.

The Horrific Incident

On Monday, a bus carrying pilgrims to the holy city of Mecca busted into flames after colliding with a bridge. This horrific incident led to the deaths of 20 people and left two dozens others injured.

As per the Saudi State media reports, the incident took place in the southern province of Asir and has bought light to the difficulties faced by the pilgrims while travelling to the holy cities  of Islam Mecca and Medina.

Unfortunately, this accident took place during the first week of Ramadan, a very busy period for umrah pilgrimages, and just a few months before the annual hajj pilgrimage, which expects to draw millions of Muslims to the holy city.

What the Media had to Say

The state-affiliated Al-Ekhbariya television stated: “According to preliminary information we have now obtained, the number of dead in this accident reached 20, while the total number of injured was around 29.”

Although it claimed the fatalities were of “various nationalities,” neither they nor a breakdown were mentioned. While the private publication Okaz said the accident was caused by brake problems, the channel stated only that the bus experienced “car difficulty” without providing any details.

As the channel showed a reporter standing next to the burnt shell of the bus and quoted that, “The bus then struck a bridge, flipped over, and caught fire.”

Same Incident has happened in the Past as Well

At Medina, a bus crashed with another large vehicle in October 2019, killing about 35 foreigners and injuring four more.

Transporting pilgrims across the sacred sites of Saudi Arabia is a risky operation, especially during the hajj when buses may cause tedious traffic jams that last for hours.

Pilgrimages are an important part of the expanding tourist industry and the Saudi officials hope that it will help diversify the economics of the country away from fossil fuels.
