An Australia-based man was arrested for faking his own kidnapping, and throwing the cops in tizzy, only to spend New Year’s Eve with his lover instead of his girlfriend. The accused, identified as 35-year-old Paul Lera, was arrested earlier on Thursday, after his abduction was reported and the Australian cops spent nearly 200 hours to ascertain his whereabouts.

The matter came to the fore after Sergeant Kate McKinley from New South Wales Police told the local court about an investigation into Paul’s alleged ‘abduction’ which costed the cops and the state’s government over Aus $25,000 (about Rs 1 lakh 42 thousand) and several hundred hours of time being spent on the investigation.

Earlier on December 31, Paul left his home, telling his girlfriend that he was out to see his ‘financial guy’. However, later his girlfriend received a text from the alleged kidnapper. “[Partner] it’s ‘[name]’ thank you for sending Paul to me, now payback is a b**** bye bye. But I’m going to be fare [sic] OK, we will keep him with us until the morning wen [sic] he gives us his bike we call it square, no one’s touching him my word I’ll give you hun OK,” the texts read.

During investigation, the police found CCTV footage of the man hanging out with his lover after being kidnapped.

The Facts of the Matter

Men and women can go to lengths to cheat on their partners and spend some quality time with their lovers. As questionable as it may be, such incidents are more common than one would imagine or would like to know.

However, an Australia-based man recently faked his own kidnapping, only to somehow be able to spend the New Year’s Eve with his lover, and not his girlfriend. However, the ploy backfired, and he was arrested for charges of false accusation with intent as well as false representation.

Cops Get Involved

The girlfriend, as one would assume, took to the police, assuming that he was kidnapped over his expensive dirt bike. The police launched an investigation and started analysing CCTV footage, along with interviewing witnesses and persons associated to Paul.

While analysing the CCTV footage, the cops found Paul hanging out with his lover and had made up the story about his own kidnapping. While giving a report to the local court, Sergeant Kate McKinley from New South Wales Police told that Paul called his father the day after about his own kidnapping. However, the calls were made from Dapto, not Wollongong, where he told he was.

Girlfriend was Sex Worker

However, he lied claiming that he was dropped off by the abductors. As per a LADbible report, Paul had a long history with a sex worker, who texted his girlfriend about ‘kidnapping’.

Meanwhile, in all the investigation, the police department spent a whopping Aus $25,000 (about Rs 1 lakh 42 thousand) and about 100-200 hours. Later, Paul was granted a bail in the case and is scheduled to appear sometime this month again.
