In a horrific incident reported from Ayodhya, two sisters, allegedly from the Dalit community, were gang-raped by 3 men. Further, the victims’ father alleged that the ‘local police tried to hush up’ the incident. According to reports, the two siblings were held captive in a village in Ayodhya’s Bikapur police station limits. The police also stated that one of the victims is a minor.

According to reports, the incident transpired earlier on Monday afternoon when the victims were returning from a market in Sherpurpura to their village. This was when the three accused ambushed the victims and held them captive. The three youths reportedly took the victims to a nearby sugarcane field.

After outraging their modesty in the sugarcane field, the accused threatened the victims of further horrific consequences should they raise an alert. They fled the spot. According to Pramod Kumar Yadav, circle officer, Bikapur, an extensive search was launched to nab the three accused.

According to the victims’ father, local cops tried to hush up the incident. However, later an FIR was registered in the matter when senior police officials intervened. Based on the complaint, FIR has been filed against Bhai Lal Yadav, Tribhuvan Yadav, and another unidentified youth.

The accused are also booked under the Dalits and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences.

Background

According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, in the last decade, crimes against Dalits have increased by a horrific 37%. The number is all the more alarming when compared against the conviction rate, which increased by only 2.5%.

Meanwhile, crimes against Dalit women saw a sharp rise of 86% between 2009-2019. Shockingly enough, an average 10 daily cases of rape of Dalit women were reported in 2019, with Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh reporting the highest number of cases respectively.

Accused held Victims’ Captive

According to reports, the two siblings were returning to their village from a market in Sherpurpura. This was when the three accused ambushed them. The three accused then held the victims’ captive and took them to a sugarcane field where they allegedly gang-raped them. The accused also threatened the victims with dire consequences and told them to keep a lid on the matter.

Police Tried to hush Incident: Father of Victims

As per circle officer Yadav, the girls told about the horrific ordeal they were subjected to on Tuesday. On Tuesday, the victims’ father filed a police complaint against the three accused. The victims’ father alleged that the local cops tried to hush the matter. However, when senior officers intervened, an FIR was registered in the matter.

Two of the three accused have been identified as Bhai Lal Yadav and Tribhuvan Yadav, while the third accused remains unidentified.

Accused Booked

Based on the complaint, an FIR has been filed against the aforementioned accused under multiple sections of IPC. This includes Section 376-D (gang rape), Section 323 (causing hurt), Section 506 (criminal intimidation.

Further, the accused have also been booked under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
