On Sunday, the India women’s U-19 team lifted the inaugural women’s cup, and BCCI announced a Rs 5 crore reward prize for the entire team and support staff.

On Sunday, the Shefali Verma led women’s team registered a thumping victory against the mighty England, defeating them by a hefty margin of 3 wickets with as many as 36 balls to spare. The incident is surely going to pave new path for women cricketing fraternity in India, as it comes after the announcements regarding the Women’s Premiere League.

Jay Shah, BCCI secretary took to Twitter in congratulating the team and announced a prize money of Rs 5 crores. “Women’s Cricket in India is on the upswing and the World Cup triumph has taken the stature of women’s cricket several notches higher. I am delighted to announce INR 5 crore for the entire team and support staff as prize money. This is surely a path-breaking year,” Shah tweeted.

After restricting England at a modest total of 68, Indian U-19 young guns came out all bats swinging, and skipper Shafali Verma played a blitz 15 of 11. While the Indian U-19 team lost a couple of wickets in the beginning, they chased down the total in 14 overs.

With football legend Messi winning, Indian batter Kohli registering a 100, and now the U-19 women’s world cup victory, Indian sports fans have got plenty to rejoice to in the new year. On Sunday, it was the women’s U-19 team that made the country proud, by defeating England comfortably and lifting the first ever women’s U-19 T20 world cup.

For their thumping victory, and consistent performance throughout the season, BCCI announced a prize money of Rs 5 crores to the entire team and support staff. Jay Shah, BCCI secretary recently took to Twitter, and congratulated the entire team for its performance on the field, assuring that their victory would usher in a new brighter, and more shining era of women’s cricket in the nation.

“Kudos to the India U19 team for winning the #U19T20WorldCup.This is a phenomenal achievement as our young cricketers have made the country proud. That the young players weren’t overawed by the big occasion speaks volume about their steely characters and temperament,” Shah tweeted.

The victory is being likened to the Virat Kohli’s led U-19 team winning the 2008 world cup, and the era of cricket it triggered. After the Kohli led U-19 team won the 2008 U-19 world cup, an IPL auction soon followed, thanks to which many young players became sensations overnight, and continued to have a triumphant career in the years to come.
