An IAS officer recently shared a video of a giant Indian squirrel and left netizens surprised. The video was shared by IAS officer Supriya Sahu who captioned the video with, ‘The beautiful little giant ️Malabar Giant Squirrel in Coonoor”.

In the video gone viral, a giant brown coloured squirrel can be seen munching a tree branch. While one wouldn’t expect a lot of acrobatic movement from the squirrel, owing to its weight, the squirrel in the video also shared how nimble it can be. In the video, the squirrel can be seen effortlessly leaping to the other side of the tree and climbing further. The squirrel bushy tail, its cute face and its overall demeanor led netizens go “awww” on the video.

For the unversed, the Malabar Giant Squirrel, as its name suggest, can grow as much as 10 inches and its tail can be as long, if not more. While most squirrels weigh in grams, the Malabar Giant Squirrels are known for weighing as much as 2 kg.

The Facts of the Matter

The loved and appreciated animated film franchise Ice Age is famous for its characters like Sid (ground sloth), Diego (saber tooth), and Manny (a woolly mammoth). The franchise is also famous for its elaborate sequences of an unnamed squirrel, who’s obsessed with collecting acrons, and in its obsession, goes through volcanoes and icebergs.

In real world, kids and adults alike, remain fascinated with these furry creatures. While kids can spend hours following the antiques of squirrels, jumping down and up a tree, adults are reminded of their own childhood when they get a glimpse of the furry creature.

While most squirrel grow 15-20 inches long, weighing a measly 750gm to maybe a kilo, there’s a unique type of squirrel that weighs more than most people would imagine them to.

Recently, IAS officer Supriya Sahu took to Twitter and shared the video of a Malabar giant squirrel. The video has left netizens stunned and gushing over the size and the antics of the squirrel.

In the video gone viral, a multi-colored squirrel can be seen munching a tree branch up on a tree. While one would not assume the squirrel to be quick and nimble, in the blink of an eye, the squirrel leaps and climbs up the tree, only to move to the other side of the tree and climb further. Be sure to not blink because you may just lose the moment that may put a smile on your face.

For the unversed, the Malabar Giant Squirrel or the Indian giant squirrel, is one of the largest squirrels in the world. Its length ranges to up to 1ft 8 in (head to body), and its tail adds the same length. Moreover, the cute little munchkins can weigh as much as 2 kg and at times have been recorded to weigh as much as 3 kg.
