A Bengaluru-based couple threatened to self-immolate themselves as a protest against demolition drive. The couple got rescued as the woman was ready with the matchstick to light herself and her husband on fire. The dramatic video of the incident has since been making rounds of social media. The incident was reported from Bengaluru’s Gayatri Layout in the K R Puram area.

According to reports, Sona Singh and Sunil Singh, had doused themselves with inflammable liquid and had threatened to immolate. In a desperate protest against the city’s civic body’s demolition drive, the couple also noted that they had documents to prove that their house was constructed legally and was not made over a drain. Reportedly, the couple owned a three-storey building which was scheduled to be demolished.

Seeing the couple about to self-immolate, the locals alerted the fire and emergency personnel of the city who rushed to the spot Harrowing video of the incident shows personnel from emergency department pouring water over the couple as the woman is just about to light a matchstick and set herself and her husband on fire.

Based on comparative analysis of suicide data published by NCRB report, the number of deaths by self-immolation in 2021 was 64% less than the ones recorded in 2000. As many as 4,195 persons committed suicides by self-immolation in India in 2021. While the number may be combatively lesser, it is still 4,195 more than one would hope and desire.

On one hand, it is the most desperate form of protest, where a person tired of proving their righteousness, has no other way to prove they are right. On the other hand, it can be looked as a last-resort attempt to bring a powerful figure or authorities to the knees, and having one’s own way.

The Facts of the Matter

In a desperate bid to protest against the city’s demolition drive, a couple in Bengaluru were about to self-immolate when they were rescued. Thanks to the efforts of the emergency personnel, the couple got saved right at the moment where the woman was ready to light the matchstick.

The incident was reported from Bengaluru’s Gayatri Layout in the K R Puram area where Sona Singh and Sunil Singh were threatening to self-immolate.

Sunil and Sona’s act and subsequent rescue, was caught on video, visuals of which are going viral.

What Does the Video Show?

The video shows a couple surrounded by locals begging them to not carry on with the act. Meanwhile, personnel from emergency department behind are also seen trying to convince the couple. Undeterred by the convincing and persuasion, the couple douse themselves with inflammable liquid. Matters escalate when the woman in question picks up a matchstick. As she is about to light the stick, the emergency responders throw buckets of water one after the other. Before long, the responders pull up the woman who was standing on the ledge.

Civic Body Claims Encroachment, Couple Disapproves

As per reports, Sona and her husband Sunil own a three-storey building. They have accused of the city’s civic body of demolishing their property which is constructed legally. Meanwhile, the civic body has maintained that the house was encroachment over a stormwater drain in the SR Layout. When the civic body’s personnel reached the location to carry out the drive, the irate couple stood on the ledge of the building, and threatened to self-immolate.
