In a heartwarming development, a doctor in Bengaluru, who was reportedly stuck in traffic, ran for 45 minutes and covered distance of 3 km to perform surgery in time. In a video gone viral, the doctor can be seen dressed in a blue shirt and running at a brisk pace to make it to the hospital on time. The doctor-in-question who decided to abandon his car and run was identified as Dr. Govind Nandakumar, a gastroenterology surgeon.

According to reports, Dr Govind Nandakumar was in his car and driving towards the Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru’s Sarjapur to perform a complicated surgery. While he had almost made it till the last stretch of his drive, he somehow ended up getting concerningly delayed due to traffic jams.

In a TSNE report, Dr. Nandakumar was quoted saying, “The last stretch usually taken 10 mins. I was stuck in the traffic, getting nervous about being late. I checked Google Maps which showed that it will take another 45 minutes.”

Knowing that his patients aren’t allowed to have meals until they are done with their surgeries, Dr. Nandakumar wanted to make sure that he didn’t make them wait for too long.

He abandoned his car, and managed to make it on time for the scheduled surgery.

The Facts of the Matter

Most of us have been stuck in traffic at different points of time and looked at our watches with annoyance and frustration. This is especially true for doctors and healthcare workers who are required to reach at a particular place at a particular time. Failing to do so often results in life-or-death situation.

A Bengaluru-based surgeon was on the edge of such a situation. Dr. Govind Nandakumar had two choices – wait in traffic and hope against all hopes that it will ease up, get out of his vehicle, and make a run for it – literally, so that he can make it to a surgery in time.

The Two Options – The Easy One & the Right One

The first option was the easy one, the second option was the right one. The gastroenterology surgeon chose the right option and managed to reach at the hospital at the right time. According to reports, Dr. Nandakumar was scheduled for an emergency laparoscopic gallbladder surgery at the Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru’s Sarjapur.

He had made it on time till the last stretch of his drive when everything started going downhill. The last stretch, which usually takes 10 minutes, would have taken him another 45 minutes had he waited. The traffic intensified further, and Dr. Nandakumar started getting nervous by the minute.

“I did not want to waste any more time waiting for the traffic to clear up as my patients aren’t allowed to have their meals until surgery is over. I did not want to keep them waiting for long,” he told TOI.

Making a Run For It – Literally

Seeing that the traffic was not easing anytime soon, he simply got out of his car, and decided to cover the rest of the journey on foot. As he had a driver with him, he was comfortable to leave his car behind him.

For the next 45 minutes, Dr. Nandakumar kept a brisk pace, not thinking twice about anything, and covered a stretch of three kilometers to the hospital.

“I have a driver, so, I was able to leave the car behind. It was easy for me to run because I gym regularly.  I ran three km to hospital, and was in time for the surgery,” he was quoted in a New Indian Express report.
