In Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind, a man with a monthly salary of Rs 58,000, was recently slapped with Rs 113.8 crore Income Tax notice. This, despite the Prime Minister intervening after the man’s strange predicament was covered by TOI earlier in 2020. The man, identified as Ravi Gupta, has since approached ED and CBI, but has questioned why his plight goes unheard every time.
Gupta received yet another notice from the Income Tax department to deposit a whopping Rs 113 crore as taxes for alleged transactions of Rs 132 crore that were reportedly carried out in his account in 2011-12. With a monthly salary of Rs 58,000, Ravi Gupta, was first slapped with a notice in 2019 demanding Rs 3.49 crore as penalty for the same alleged transactions.
But get this, Gupta claims he was just a measly BPO employee drawing a monthly salary of Rs 7,000 during that period.
After a report on Gupta’s plight got heard by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the finance ministry was routed to the bank by the Reserve Bank of India, which submitted a report clearing Gupta.
To his dismay, Gupta has now received a fresh notice in April this year, and this time through the Income Tax department’s ‘faceless proceedings’.
The Facts of the Matter
A man from Madhya Pradesh, Ravi Gupta, has received a notice demanding a whopping amount of money for alleged transactions made through his account back in the day.
But here’s the catch, Gupta claims he was a man with a measly salary during that period. Could this be a classic case of mistaken identity, or is the Income Tax department trying to keep up with their reputation of being a money-grabbing unit more than a tax collecting department?
Man’s Life Gets Disrupted Over Rs 132 Cr IT-Notice
In the small town of Bhind, Ravi Gupta lives a decent life, earning Rs 58,000 a month. Sounds like a pretty good life, right? Wrong. Poor Ravi has been served yet another notice from the Income Tax department, demanding him to pay a whopping Rs 113 crore as taxes for alleged transactions of Rs 132 crore that were reportedly carried out in his account back in 2011-12.
First Notice Surfaced When Gupta Earned Rs 7,000
Now, let’s rewind to the year 2019, when Ravi received his first notice from the I-T department, demanding Rs 3.49 crore as penalty for 2011-12. He claims he was working with a BPO in Indore in that period, drawing a monthly salary of just Rs 7,000.
PM Modi Had Intervened Back in 2020
The plot thickens when we fast forward to January 2020 when the PMO took notice of Ravi’s plight after a report on his case was published in TOI. The case was referred to the finance ministry, which was then routed to the bank by the Reserve Bank of India. The bank submitted a report clearing Gupta, giving him some hope that this nightmare might be over.
‘Faceless Proceedings’ Against Gupta
But alas, it wasn’t meant to be. On April 28th, a fresh notice was served on Ravi, through the I-T department’s ‘faceless proceedings.’
This time, Ravi was left in a state of utter disbelief. He’s been tirelessly approaching central agencies for the last five years in a desperate attempt to get his name cleared. He’s even filed complaints with ED and CBI but wonders why they are not investigating it.
To add fuel to the fire, two of his colleagues from the same BPO – Kapil Shukla and Khandwa’s Praveen Rathore – have received similar I-T notices for 2011-12.
