BJP MP from Himachal Pradesh Ram Swaroop Sharma was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Wednesday morning at his residence. The 62-year-old Member of Parliament was found hanging in his room and the police have initiated a probe into the matter to investigate the cause of death.

The police official was quoted by various news outlets saying, “He was found hanging inside his room, which was locked from inside. No suicide note has been found.” According to the police officials the Himachal Pradesh based MP’s personal assistant reached out to the police control room after the former’s call was not attended by Mr. Sharma.

The police took immediate action and a team was rushed to Mr. Sharma’s residence. On finding out that the door of Mr. Sharma’s room was locked from the inside, the police officials forced the door open and found him hanging through a fan on the ceiling. According to reports, Ram Swaroop Sharma was unwell since the past few months. He was reported being treated for depression for the past 6 months, having already suffered a heart attack in 2017. He was also administered the first COVID-19 vaccination dose on March 13.

As soon as the news of Mr. Sharma was confirmed, BJP cancelled its parliamentary party that was scheduled for this morning. The Indian Lok Sabha too has been adjourned till 1 PM after it paid a tribute to the BJP MP.

Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman took to Twitter and expressed her sorrow saying how she was “shocked” to find out about Mr Sharma’s demise.

Kiren Rijiju who is India’s Sports Minister and holds the office of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports also shared his condolences to Mr. Sharma’s family. In his tweet, Rijiju shared how he had great memories with Mr. Sharma and how Mr. Sharma was a ‘perfect gentleman’.

BJP MP Anurag Thakur, who was recently commissioned by the Territorial Army, took to Twitter and expressed his grief:

Mr. Sharma was born in Jalpehar village in Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh. The 1958-born-political leader was a 2-time BJP Member of Parliament, first to be elected to take to Parliament in 2014, defeating the then sitting Congress MP Pratibha Singh.

Later in 2019, he was re-elected from his home district Mandi in the Lok Sabha Election, defeating the Congress candidate Ashray Sharma who is the grandson of former Telecommunications Minister Sukh Ram. He was also the member of Standing Committee on External Affairs and the member of Consultative Committee, Ministry of External Affairs.

It should be noted that this was not the first time an Indian politician died under mysterious circumstances recently. On February 22, 7-term-MP from Dadra and Nagar Haveli Mohan Delkar was found dead in a hotel in Marine Drive, Mumbai.

Mohan Delkar (58), a seven-term MP from Dadra and Nagar Haveli, was found dead in a hotel in Marine Drive area of south Mumbai on February 22.

According to police a suicide note was recovered from his room after investigation. The 4-page-long note was written in Gujarati and had the names of people, including a senior politician who pushed him to the edge where Delkar saw no other option but to take his life.

Congress attacked BJP claiming tha Mr Delkar wrote letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking help. Congress alleged that his letters were ignored and his suicide was “tragedy for democracy”.
