According to some reports, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya became the cause of a two-hour airplane delay after he ended up opening the emergency exit of an IndiGo plane. The incident took place earlier in December and took place at the Chennai airport. The flight took no action on Surya, and was let go after he apologised. The incident has triggered attack by the Congress against BJP faction and its firebrand leader Tejasvi Surya.

After the reports of the incident sparked a debate, IndiGo issued a statement regarding the matter. “A passenger travelling on Flight 6E 7339 from Chennai to Tiruchirapalli on Dec 10, 2022, accidentally opened the emergency exit during the boarding process. The passenger immediately apologised for the action. As per SOPs, the incident was logged and the aircraft underwent mandatory engineering checks, which led to a delay in the flight’s departure,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, flight regulatory board DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) told Indian Express that the incident took place due to the passenger’s “mistake”. “It appears that by mistake, the RH (right hand) emergency exit got opened by a passenger while the aircraft was on ground,” the DGCA said in its statement, adding, that “no safety was compromised” in the incident.

The reports comes days after the Air India pee-gate incident.

The Facts of the Matter

It appears that a week can’t pass by without reports surfacing passengers causing distress and delays in planes due to their behaviour or actions. Now, it is BJP Tejasvi Surya who is in the eye of the controversial storm after reports appeared alleging, he opened the emergency exit of a plane by mistake. The mistake allegedly caused a two-hour flight delay, reports claim.

Tejasvi was Sitting Next to Emergency Exit

The incident came to the fore after some media outlets ran reports of Tejasvi Surya opening the exit door of an IndiGo plane in Chennai airport. The flight was scheduled to take off at 10.05 am earlier last month and Surya was reportedly sitting near the emergency exit seat.

When the flight crew was taxiing for takeoff, the emergency exit door cranked open, causing the plane to be halted immediately. What followed was a round of protocols, including all the mechanical checks being done, and a delay of two hour.
