Nitin Chandrakant Desai, well-known for his work in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Jodhaa Akbar and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, recently passed away. The police suspect the death of the Bollywood art director to be a suicide after his body was discovered in his studio in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. He had won numerous awards such as four National Film Awards for Best Art Direction and three Filmfare Best Art Direction Awards as well as the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, in 2016. Desai’s untimely death has left everyone mourning his loss.

Work and Life of Mr. Desai

Nitin Chandrakant Desai, born on January 25, 1965 in Dapoli, Maharshtra, was an esteemed Bollywood art director known for his intricate and historically accurate movie sets. Starting out as a fourth assistant art director in 1987, Desai worked his way up to art director with his debut on the television series Chanakya (1991) and later made his Bollywood debut with the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999). He went on to win four National Film Awards and three Filmfare Best Art Direction Awards for his work on films such as Lagaan (2001), Devdas (2002), Swades (2004), Jodhaa Akbar (2008), and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015). In 2016, Desai was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, an impressive achievement for his successful career. He later founded ND Studios, a film and television production facility in Karjat, Maharashtra, and produced the film Desh Devi (2002).
