A bridge in Bihar, made at cost of Rs 13 crores, collapsed before inauguration in Begusarai, with the visuals of the collapsed bridge going viral on social media. The incident was reported from Bihar’s Begusarai, where a 206-meter-long bridge was made over the Burhi Gandak river. The bridge was made by Ma Bhagwati Construction, who won the tender from the state’s Road Construction Department (RCD).

According to reports, only the construction of a metaled approach road was remaining for the inauguration of the bridge. “Though the bridge was not inaugurated, light traffic was continuing as the bridge links three panchayats with a combined population of around 20,000 to NH-31,” an official was quoted saying in Hindustan Times report.

Earlier on Thursday, movements of vehicles and pedestrians was stopped after cracks developed in pillars number 2 and 3 were reported. Enraged locals have alleged that had the traffic not been prohibited, the casualties and property damage due to bridge collapse, could have been worse.

As per the reports, the 206-meter-long bridge was constructed before 2016, and since 2017, locals had started using the bridge to walk and travel without an official inauguration. Light vehicles and locals often plied on the bridge, despite it not being inaugurated.

The Facts of the Matter

The year of 2022 has been a strange and tragic one when it comes to bridges in India. Meanwhile, in Bihar, a 50-year-old, 500-tonne bridge was dismantled by thieves who posed as Irrigation Officers. Later in October, the Morbi Bridge tragedy collapse led to deaths of at least 135 people.

Collapse Could’ve Resulted in Human Tragedy

As a result of the cracks, the front side of the bridge collapsed in the river earlier on Sunday, with the visuals of the immediate aftermath of the collapse being shared on social media.

No casualties have been reported in the incident. Locals however have claimed that had the vehicles and commuters been present on the bridge, the numbers in terms of causalities and property damage, would have been tragic.

A Hindustan Times report quoted Ballia sub-divisional officer (SDO) Rohit Kumar saying, “The bridge was not officially inaugurated as the approach road was incomplete and traffic was strictly prohibited since Thursday after cracks were seen in pillars and hence there was no casualty.”
