Bruce Willis has been diagnosed with aphasia, a disorder in which a person’s capacity to talk and communicate is impaired. His family announced on Wednesday that the actor will be stepping down from acting.

On Wednesday, the actor’s family, notably his wife Emma Heming-Willis and ex-wife Demi Moore, posted an update on his status on Instagram. Aphasia is affecting his cognitive ability, according to the statement.

Willis, 67, is most remembered for his role as John McClane in the Die Hard movies, which catapulted him to fame.

“After considerable thought, Bruce has chosen to quit the career that has meant so much to him,” his family said in a statement. “We are so grateful for your ongoing love, compassion, and support during this extremely difficult time for our family.”

His acting career started in the 1980s, although he did not become a huge star until later in the decade, first in the ABC TV series Moonlighting with Cybill Shepherd, and then in his 1988 portrayal as John McClane in the first Die Hard film.

Following the news, several actors and other celebrities sent their condolences to Willis and his family.

What is Aphasia?

Aphasia is a communication disorder that affects people of all ages. It can influence your speech, writing, and comprehension of both spoken and written language.

Aphasia usually happens as a result of a stroke or a head injury. However, it can also develop gradually as a result of a slow-growing brain tumour or a condition that causes lasting damage (degenerative). Aphasia severity is determined by several factors, including the source and extent of brain damage.

Speech and language therapy is the major treatment for aphasia once the reason has been identified. The person with aphasia relearns and practices language abilities, as well as learns to communicate in other ways. Family members are frequently involved in the process, assisting the person in communicating.
