A single lottery ticket sold in California has won the massive $1.765 billion Powerball jackpot, lottery officials announced on Thursday. The jackpot ranks as the second largest in Powerball and U.S. lottery history, only behind the record $2.04 billion Powerball prize won in California last November.
Winning Ticket Worth Over $774 Million Cash
The winning ticket matched all six numbers drawn on Wednesday night – white balls 22, 24, 40, 52, 64 and red Powerball 10. The winner has the choice between receiving the full jackpot amount through an annuity paid out over 29 years, or taking a lump sum payment of $774.1 million in cash. Both prize options are before federal and state taxes.

Rollover Jackpot Reaches New Heights
The jackpot had been steadily growing over multiple drawings after no ticket matched all six numbers. Strong ticket sales in the final hours before the drawing boosted the jackpot to $1.765 billion, exceeding the advertised estimate. This marked only the second time in Powerball’s history that back-to-back jackpot runs have produced billion-dollar prizes.
Where the Winning Ticket Was Purchased
Lottery officials have not yet announced where in California the winning ticket was sold. The last record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot was won on a ticket purchased in Altadena, California last November. Lottery winners in California have one year from the draw date to claim their prize.
Other Big Winners Across the Country
While only one ticket won the enormous jackpot, the Powerball drawing produced several other big winners across the country. Seven tickets matched the five white balls to win $1 million each, sold in California, Florida, New York, Oklahoma, Virginia, and Arizona. Two tickets in Arizona and Pennsylvania increased their prize to $2 million by including the Power Play option. There were also 121 tickets that won $50,000 each and 24 tickets that won $100,000 each.
Powerball Sales Benefit Public Education
Revenue from Powerball ticket sales supports important public programs and services. The California Lottery stated that Powerball sales since July have raised nearly $110 million for education in California alone. In total, lottery officials report that more than half of all proceeds from Powerball tickets stay in the jurisdiction where the ticket was purchased.
Improving Your Odds
The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 24.9. However, the odds of matching all six numbers to hit the jackpot remain incredibly slim, at just 1 in 292.2 million. Purchasing multiple tickets can improve a player’s odds, but only marginally. Lottery officials emphasize responsible play.
Next Scheduled Drawing on Saturday
The next Powerball drawing will be held on Saturday, October 14 at 10:59 p.m. ET, with the jackpot resetting to its minimum $20 million. Drawings are broadcast live from the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee, Florida. Tickets can be purchased for $2 each at authorized retailers in 45 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
