In the most recent development around the tragic California mass shotting, the 72-year-old suspect reportedly killed himself after murdering 10 people and injuring 7 others at a dance studio. The mass shooting was reported from Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park and the deceased suspect has been identified as Huu Can Tran. Tran was found dead in a cargo van. He was involved in a standoff with the police who had cornered him, and eventually shot himself dead in the end.

According to Los Angeles County Sherrif, Robert Luna, the 72-year-old had used a high-capacity pistol to wreak havoc at a ballroom dance venue known for catering to elderly patrons. Local authorities received an alert regarding locals “pouring out of the location screaming” sometime around 10.30 pm local time on Saturday.

The suspect reportedly gunned down at least 5 men and 5 women at the dance club on an evening where Lunar New Year was being celebrated. Following the tragic incident, California Governor Gavin Newsom was quoted in a Al Jazeera report saying, “Monterey Park should have had a night of joyful celebration of the Lunar New Year. Instead, they were the victims of a horrific and heartless act of gun violence.”

Minutes after the shooting, the suspect reached another club and tried to mass-shoot where some locals wrestled the weapon away from him.

The Facts of the Matter

Amid everyday debate on gun-control laws in the country, US reported another mass shooting recently. In the most recent tragedy, at least 5 men and 5 women were gunned down by a 72-year-old suspect, who later killed himself after having a standoff with the local cops. The incident took place at Star Ballroom Dance Studio in California’s Monterey Park. He is identified as Huu Can Tran.

Suspect was Armed to Teeth

Preliminary investigation has thus far revealed that the suspect was armed to the teeth, with multiple firearms in his possession, including a semi-automatic pistol with extended magazine. The suspect was targeting dance club which is famous for hosting elderly Asian and American residents in the area.

Second Shooting was a Possibility

After raising hell at the dance club, the 72-year-old suspect reached another club minutes close to the first one, and tried to carry out another mass shooting. However, as per the authorities, some locals were able to wrestle the man and take the gun away from him, prompting him to flee the scene of crime.

The Shocking Aftermath

As per the sheriff, the suspect, Huu Can Tran, shot himself after the police approached his white van, some 20 miles away from the Star Ballroom Dance Studio. A stand did ensue, following which officers heard a gunshot from the van. The officers approached the van to know the source of the gunshot, and called for a SWAT team, seeing the suspect with the self-inflected bullet wound.

Meanwhile, 7 people remained hospitalized on Sunday night, and one person has been reported to be in critical condition.

Following the incident, US President Joe Biden ordered US flags at all public buildings across the country to be flown at half-staff to pay tributes to the victims of the California mass-shooting.

US Mass Shooting Remains a Problem

US continues to be plagued with senseless mass shootings and the most recent incident marked the fifth such incident just this month. The deadliest of the mass shooting reported recently took place at a school in Uvalde, Texas, where 21 people, were killed. US reported 647 shootings in 2022 which had four or more victims.
