In a terrible accident caught on cam, bystanders were thrown from the divider and were run over to their deaths by a speeding out of control car in Punjab. At least 4 people have been reported dead in the incident while 2 are currently seriously injured and hospitalized. The incident occurred earlier on Sunday near Gharuan village, Punjab. In the video it can be clearly seen that a speeding car lost its control and ended up hitting two bystanders. The car also crashed into a road divider and due to the impact, turned turtle. So far, the 4 deaths comprise of 2 persons sitting in the car and the two bystanders. The two deceased bystanders were identified as Surinder Singh and Zameel Khan who worked as auto drivers.

Background

Like every populous state in India, Punjab too witnesses its fair share of road accidents and casualties because of the same. So much so that an Indian Express report citied that the road accidents that happened between 20016 and 2019 amounted to Rs. 15,000 crores as monetary loss (approximately 3% of the state’s GDP). Further, Punjab also attributed to about 3.5% of total deaths due to road accidents during the same period.

Thanks to safety awareness and increased safety features in cars, Punjab witnessed a 15% decline in casualties due to road accidents in 2020 when compared to 2019. Moreover, it also witnessed 18% sharp decline in total road accidents in 2020, when compared with 2019.,

Recently, the state witnessed another tragic accident, the video of which has gone viral on Twitter.

The Facts of the Matter

4 persons, including two auto drivers, died after a speeding Hyundai Verna mowed them over after it allegedly lost control. The incident happened closed to the famous Chandigarh University, Mohali, in Gharuan village. Two car occupants also died in the tragic mishap. The two auto drivers were trying to cross the road divider after taking their tea when they were mowed over. They were identified Zameel Khan and Surinder Singh, both the lone bread winners of their family.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the car rolled over 12 times before it came to a halt and then was turtled. Further, eyewitnesses have also claimed that the car occupants were under the influence of alcohol, but the police have so far not confirmed the allegation.

What the Video Shows (Discretion Advised)

The horrifying video runs 55 second long and gives a full account of what transpired moments before the tragedy struck. The first few frames of the video shows the black coloured sedan picking up speed and going extremely fast on the road.

In the next frame, the car can be seen losing its control and crashing into a road divider. The impact of the crash was such that in the next frame, two persons standing on the road divider can be seen mowed over by the car.

Subsequentially a bike rider who also fell down with his bike due to the impact ran away from the spot in fear.

The final few frames show people gathering around the debris of the car as the dust of the tragedy settled.

Car Occupants Identified, Driver Still Not Revealed

According to preliminary investigations, the car occupants were identified as Sanjeet Kumar, Vikramjeet Singh, Ankush and Rahul Yadav. The occupants were making their way to Ludhiyana when their car lost control and met with the accident.

Reportedly. Vikramjeet Singh was rushed to the GMSH (Government Multi Specialty Hospital) where he succumbed to his injuries. Further, the police has yet to ascertain as to who was driving the car.
