In the recent development regarding the CBSE Class 12 plan, the board will consider performances in class 10-12. Further, it is also revealed that the results will be declared by July 31. The development comes after the Centre decided to cancel the CBSE 12 board exams due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic complications.

Background

On June, 1, the Centre announced that the 12th CBSE exams will be cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken to Twitter and had written,

“Government of India has decided to cancel the Class XII CBSE Board Exams. After extensive consultations, we have taken a decision that is student-friendly, one that safeguards the health as well as future of our youth.”

In the wake of the class 12 board exam cancellation, the CBSE on Thursday announced its result plan and shared that the board will evaluate the class 12 result based on the students’ performances in the prior three classes – 10, 11 & 12.

On Thursday, the Central Board of Secondary Education submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court in which it shared that the assessment of the theory portion of the cancelled exams will be done based on 40% weightage given to class 12th marks, 30% for 11th class marks and remaining 30% based on 10th class marks.

As no main board exams will be scheduled further due to the cancellation, the marks of class 12th will be based on the marks secured in the unit tests, mid-terms or the pre-board exams.

How will the 3 exams’ marks will be computed

According to the affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, the CBSE is planning to compute the marks of class 10, 11 and 12 in the following way.

Class 12: As mentioned earlier, the 40% of the weightage will be based on results that came in a student’s unit test, his/her mid-terms, or his/her pre-board examination. Meanwhile, the practical marks will be awarded based on the actual marks secured by a student that is validated and uploaded by the CBSE on its portal.

Class 11: With respect to each subject, the 30% of the weightage will be based on the theory marks secured by a student.

Class 10: The remaining 30% of the weightage will be based on the average of the theory marks secured by the students in their three best performing subjects.

What can a student do in the case of unsatisfactory assessment?

In the cases of a student not happy with the assessment based on the proposed policy, the student will be given another opportunity to give their 12th standard exams. The exam will be conducted when the conditions to conduct such an exam are conductive. As per the affidavit submitted by the CBSE, the marks scored in these exams will be considered final.

What if a student fails to meet the qualification?

Attorney General, Mr. K.K Venugopal said that if a particular student fails to meet the qualification criteria – which is now spread across results of 10th, 11th and 12th – the student will be classified into an ‘essential repeat’ or a ‘compartment category’.

What did the Supreme Court say after CBSE submitted the affidavit?

After the affidavit was submitted and the relevant parties shared their insights, the apex court said-

“After hearing parties we have no manner of doubt that this scheme be taken forward. we have in principle accepted the scheme. In any case students will get an opportunity to appear in an exam to improve their marks. Prima face we have no reservation to accept the same and permit the boards to proceed on this basis,”

The top court however added that certain aspects would need to be applied to the accepted scheme. The aspects being, dispute resolution, if a student wants correction of the final results, and the timeline for result declaration, and the date before the optional exam will be conducted.
