A private jet veered off the runway and crashed while landing amid heavy rains at Mumbai airport on Thursday evening, injuring all eight people on board. The co-pilot, 21-year-old Neil Diwan, suffered a spinal injury and was paralyzed from the waist down. He was shifted to Kokilaben Hospital on Friday morning for urgent surgery. The other seven passengers sustained minor to moderate injuries but are reported to be in stable condition.

The jet, a Learjet 45 aircraft owned by VSR Ventures, was coming from Visakhapatnam with six passengers and two crew members on board. It skidded off the runway around 5 pm. According to authorities, the plane suffered extensive damage and will need to be removed using a disabled aircraft recovery kit.

Captain and Passengers Suffer Various Injuries

46-year-old captain Sunil Kanjarbhat, who was piloting the aircraft, sustained multiple abrasions, chest and spine injuries and a scalp hematoma. A scan showed bleeding in his chest and fluid buildup around the heart. He also has a minor vertebral fracture but his vital signs are stable.

The passengers injured in the crash include 40-year-old Dhruv Kotak, who hurt his right arm and sustained a minor head abrasion; 58-year-old Danish passenger Lars Henrik Ostergaard Sorensen, who had chest and upper back injuries; and 41-year-old Kamakshi Shringarpure. The other passengers – Arul Sali, Krishnadas Kodalil, and Aakursh Sethi – also sustained unspecified injuries.

Injured Admitted for Treatment and Monitoring

All injured passengers were admitted to Criticare Hospital for treatment and observation. Co-pilot Diwan expressed a desire to be operated on by his personal doctor, so he was shifted to Kokilaben Hospital. The doctor said Diwan suffered paraplegia along with his spinal fracture.

The passengers have been advised to undergo further scans and monitoring. Authorities are investigating the cause of the runway excursion amid the heavy rainfall. The condition of the injured crew and passengers indicates the jet likely crash-landed at high speed.
