Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu had an emotional outburst in the Rajya Sabha proceedings and claimed that he “couldn’t sleep last night” due to the opposition’s behaviour. The 72-year-old diplomat had a breakdown while reading a statement in which he labelled the ruckus created the opposition a “sacrilege” and violation of “temple of democracy”.

Details

The sight of a chaotic Rajya Sabha or Lok Sabha proceeding is more common than expected. From loud slogans, to not letting a speaker speak, to even physically tearing a statement, opposition leaders of all parties have in the past created ruckus in parliament and have wasted the tax payers’ money. The same behaviour is very much alive in today’s opposition parties.

On Wednesday, Rajya Sabha Chairman and Indian Vice President Venkaiah Naidu got emotional and had a breakdown. As he gave the statement of his perspective, slogans continued to fill the parliament. Discipline and mutual respect was thrown out of the window, and chaos continued.

“I find it difficult…”

Giving his statement, Naidu said-

“I struggled to find out the reason for forcing this house to such a low yesterday. A discussion on agriculture problems and solutions was listed. I find it difficult to understand how subject listed in the list of business for yesterday would have prevented any member from raising any issue connected to the farm sector, including the three farm Bills, which some members were keen to raise in the House.”

Naidu Gives Reference to Temple, Says Act of Sacrilege Is Routine

He further added how there’s a degree of sacredness associated to the Rajya Sabha. He gave examples of temples where the devotees are only allowed to go up to the sanctum sanctorum and not beyond that.

“Entering the sanctum sanctorum of the House is an act of sacrilege and it has become routine over the years,”

-an emotional Naidu said.

“No Words to Convery my Anguish”

The Rajya Sabha president further added-

“I am distressed by the way this sacredness has been destroyed yesterday. While some members sat on the Table, some others climbed on the Table of the House, perhaps to be more visible with acts of sacrilege. I have no words to convey my anguish and to condemn such acts.”

What Happened at Rajya Sabha Recently?

Mr. Naidu was referring to the acts of indiscipline committed in Rajya Sabha. MPs of opposition parties actually climbed on the official’s tables, continued waving a black cloth and threw papers and files in the air. This happened when the house was starting its discussion on the highly contentious farm laws that were introduced earlier this year.

The members of opposition actually came close to the table where the staff of parliament sits, placed right below the speaker’s chair, and continued screaming anti-government slogans. This led to multiple adjournments of the Rajya Sabha, and yet, the ruckus didn’t seem to die down.

Congress Leader Shows No Regret

Congress leader Pratap Bajwa stood on a table and threw a file at the Chair. When asked about his behaviour, he said-

“I will do this 100 times again if the government does not give us an opportunity to discuss the three black anti-agriculture laws.”

Making a reference to this, Mr. Naidu in his statement said-

“(It is) Worrisome that some members have shot the sad moments of sacrilege in the House yesterday and posted on the social media. They only ended up showing to the people the extent to which this House can degenerate due to new found competitive and aggressive disruptions by some.”

While the official telecast of the ruckus wasn’t aired on the television, several political leaders went on to take videos of the chaos and shared it on their Twitter handles.
