Details
‘Darlings’, Alia Bhatt’s debut production venture has hit a right chord with the viewers. The dark comedy is the combination of an average storyline and a strong ensemble. Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, and Vijay Varma’s dark humour get you to laugh in the middle of tragedy, but it’s basically about ruined expectations and dreams. This film, helmed by Jasmeet K Reen, presents a striking remark about domestic abuse.
There is plenty to admire, from the actors’ sincere performances to Vishal Bhardwaj’s music and Gulzar’s lyrics, however, the ultimate product is a bit unsatisfying. However, the subject is suitable since many people can relate to it, and it will be therapeutic for them to watch how Badru and Shamshu teach Hamza a lesson.

Storyline
Badru’s (Alia Bhatt) undying love for her husband Hamza (Vijay Varma) causes her to ignore all of their relationship’s red lights. Her mother’s (Shefali Shah) repeated warnings are also neglected. Coming from a low-income background, the young wife expects a brighter tomorrow until situations get out of control.
Script Analysis
‘Darlings’ isn’t precisely a dramedy or a twisted suspense mystery, as the trailer suggests. The narrative is presented in a straightforward, basic approach about an abuser manipulating his partner in a man vs woman clash. While the theme and insights are engaging, the narration and editing could need some refinement.
The narrative by Parveez Sheikh and Jasmeet K. Reen leaves room for murky areas that will need to be addressed as the story develops. Also, there is a struggle to maintain the humour while harmonizing it with the gloomy subject.
Star Performance
There are numerous reasons to see this drama, but Shefali and Alia’s impressive performances are at the forefront of the list. The bond between Shefali and Alia establishes the mood for the rest of the film. They seamlessly get into the skin of their character. Vijay Varma appears to be a prodigy of grey-shaded characters, shedding Crocodile tears to win his point, flipping from loving hubby to brutal devil in the flash of an eye. Roshan Mathew, like many other actors, thrives on the subtle efficiency of his performances.
Direction & Music
Jasmeet K Reen’s direction is fine, and it’s difficult to believe that this is her feature film debut given how nicely she addresses the matter. Anil Mehta’s cinematography introduces us to the hidden corners of Darlings’ backdrop. The tight frames on Badru effectively depict how oppressed she feels around Hamza. Vishal Bhardwaj and Mellow D’s melodies hit smoothly without any hindrance. The rap tune Bhasad is also good. Besides Prashant Pillai’s impressive background score, the movie’s sound design hooked the audience completely. Darlings’ narrative, when mixed with the finesse of the actors, is sufficient to keep you hooked until the climax.
