In the DC VS CSK game, DC registered a victory thanks to Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan’s rampage. It was a battle between the mentor and the mentee, as young wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant led Delhi Capitals against experienced gloveman MS Dhoni’s CSK. In the end, it was the apprentice that was triumphant as Delhi Capitals defeated CSK by 7 wickets.

Being put to bat first, the yellow-jersey team got off to a jittery start as they lost Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad in a quick succession thanks to Chris Woakes and Avesh Khan’s tight opening spells. While Khan tricked Faf and sent him back for a duck, Woakes delivered a ball to remember and Gaikwad gave away an easy catch to Dhawan at slips. CSK were reeling at 33/2 by the end of the first powerplay. However, veteran batsman Suresh Raina came to the middle, and with English all-round spinner Moeen Ali stitched a partnership to remember.

The two batsmen showed no signs of the fact that their team had just lost two wickets and formed a 53-run partnership. The highlight of their partnership was Moeen hitting DC spinner Ashwin multiple fours in one over and hitting 2 maximums in the next over. However, in an attempt to hit the third six in the row, Ali mistimed and gave Shikhar Dhawan another fine catch to behold.

After Ali, it was Rayudu who joined the party and went after Ashwin, hitting a six in one of his overs. On the other end, Raina continued putting pressure on the bowlers. Despite having a slow start, CSK deposited 36 runs between 12th and 13th over. Thankfully, Ashwin finally took the wicket of Ali as the latter hit a mistimed reverse hit off Ashwin’s delivery and gave Dhawan the third catch of his day.

With the wicket of Ali, DC made an impactful comeback as Curran took the wicket of Rayudu. Soon, Raina too was sent to the dressing room after he in a giant mix-up, was run out. Raina made a fine knock, scoring 54 runs off 36 deliveries. Soon, former Indian skipper MS Dhoni was removed from the middle on a duck as he was bowled out by Avesh Khan. Between the 15th and 18th over, merely 18 runs came. However, Jadeja (24) and Curran (34) pressed the foot on the pedal and took their team to a respectable total of 189 runs.

With a target of 189 runs on the board, DC got off to a dreamy start as Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan showed no mercy to CSK’s bowling attack. All three pacers-Chahar, Curran and Thakur-were hit everywhere for a boundary or a maximum. Shaw looked confident after his disappointing last season. As expected by cricket analysts, the youngster started things at the IPL where he left off at the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Shaw played some wonderful shots during his 72-run inning that came in just 38 balls. He was also fortunate on a multiple occasion as CSK’s fielders were also having an off day. After being dropped for the second time, he hit a wonderful boundary and brought up his first fifty of the season off just 27 deliveries. Shikhar Dhawan also looked in fine form, bringing up his half-century in 37 deliveries. The duo stitched together an opening partnership of 138 runs and made the game look one-sided.

In the 14th over, Shaw tried to open his arms again against Bravo, however Ali in the deep caught the ball and sent him back to the dressing room. Soon, Shardul Thakur trapped Dhawan and sent him out on LBW for 85 runs. However, it was all but over for the CSK as DC had already done enough damage. DC Captain Rishabh Pant came in the middle and took his team to the victory in the 19th over.
