On Monday, The Delhi High Court slammed former BharatPe MD Ashneer Grover, and advised him to maintain decorum. The update comes from Indian legal news outlet Bar and Bench. The Delhi High Court’s remarks about Grover comes after his unceremonious exit from fintech startup BharatPe, which followed his various controversial remarks on social media, and online interviews. Earlier last week, Grover had tweeted “He was a nalla”, taking a not-so-subtle dig at Suhail Sameer after the latter stepped down as the CEO of the company.

“This social media has brought us down to this level. Ask him (Grover) to maintain decorum,” Justice Navin Chawla remarked. He also issued notices to applications filed by Grover, and his wife Madhuri Jain, seeking access to their email IDs.

In the court, Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, appearing for Bharat Pe, cited Ashneer Grover equating legal profession as ‘prostitution’ in his latest book. To this, the court asked for Grover’s counsel and said, “Why are you saying all these things about these professions? Do these have any relevance?”.

Earlier in the court, advocate Rajiv Nayar, appearing for BharatPe, said, “Even after filing of the suit, he (Grover) is saying things which I can’t even repeat in court.” To this, Grover’s advocate responded, “I am the largest individual shareholder in the company.”

The Facts of the Matter

Controversy’s favourite child Ashneer Grover was recently slammed by the Delhi High Court. The court advised Grover to “maintain decorum” after he was alleged of making controversial statements about the company, its members, and even the profession of legal experts – equating it to “prostitution”.

The Delhi High Court issued notice to the applications filed by Ashneer Grover, his wife Madhuri Jain, seeking access to their personal email IDs.

Further, Justice Navin Chawla chided, “This social media has brought us down to this level. Ask him (Grover) to maintain decorum,” a Bar and Bench report stated.

The remark was made in the Delhi High Court, which was hearing a case field by BharatPe, seeking reliefs and retainment from Ashneer Grover, and his wife, from making further defamatory and derogatory statements about the company.

Grover Equated Legal Profession to ‘Prostitution’

Senior advocate Rajiv Nayar, appearing for BharatPe, told the court that in Grover’s latest book ‘Doglapan’, Grover equated the profession of law to ‘prostitution’. Nayar further said that even after the suit was filed against him, Grover has been making defamatory statements against BharatPe.

“Even after filing of the suit, he (Grover) is saying things which I can’t even repeat in court,” Nayar said. To this, Advocate Giriraj, who represents Ashneer Grover, said, “I am the largest individual shareholder in the company. The AGM was being held and I was stopped. I am saying I will call the police. Don’t know what is wrong in that.”

“Why are you saying all these things?” Delhi HC

When Nayar told the court about Grover equating legal profession to prostitution, the court intervened and said, “Why are you saying all these things about these professions? Do these have any relevance? The moment you start saying something against these officers of the company, you are defaming the company.”

It should be noted that earlier last week, Grover had again turned heads after it was reported that BharatPe CEO Suhail Sameer would be stepping down from his position. After the development, Grover took a dig at Sameer, and wrote a poem saying, “Chala gaya Suhail Sameer – he was a nalla ! Shashvat – why don’t you man up and sambhalo the galla ?!”.
