In a suspected case of honour killing in Delhi, a 19-year-old wife was shot 5 times by assailants to be critically injured and the 23-year-old husband killed on the spot in the attack. Last year, the newly married couple had sought security from Haryana and Punjab High Court, after eloping to get married. The couple was attacked on June 24, Thursday.

According to police, around 6-7 men barged into the couple’s house in Dwarka’s Amberhai. Upon entering, the men fired 10 rounds and in process, killed Vinay, the 24-year-old husband of Kiran. Vinay worked as a taxi driver. Meanwhile, Kiran was gravely injured in the attack and is in the hospital.

Reportedly the couple had married in August, 2020. Both the couple’s family didn’t agree to the proposal and the couple had eloped to get married. As per the preliminary investigation, the case is allegedly of honor killing”.

Family of wife detained

Meanwhile, the surviving wife’s mother had filed a complaint before the incident at the Sonepat’s police station and FIR was registered against unidentified individuals. As of June 26, Kiran’s family is under detention and her family members will be questioned by the police.

As per an Indian Express report, Abhimanyu Kalsy, who served as the advocate of the couple said that-

“They approached me, alleging that Kiran’s family was not letting them get married and had been giving them death threats.”

High Court Justice Had Issued Order for the couple

It should be noted that Punjab & Haryana High Court’s Justice Raj Mohan Singh had passed an order wherein the Senior SI of Police of Sonepat would-

“ascertain the truth in the allegations of the petitioners… assess the threat perception of the petitioners.”

Singh had also disposed the couple’s petition and had asked the couple to appear before the SSP of the Sonepat police. As per Justice Sing’s order, the SSP-

“would be at liberty to join the petitioners or any other person acquainted with the facts of the case.”

Justice Singh’s order had further stated-

“It would be appreciated if needful in deciding the representation is done within a period of one month from the date of receipt of certified copy of this order.”

“No protection provided”: Couple’s Advocate Alleges

Meanwhile, after the deadly attack on the couple, their advocate was quoted by newspersons saying that the couple had been provided no protection. Further, advocate Kalsy also said that an FIR was filed against the husband by the girl’s family who had alleged that she was not of age and Vinay was trying to marry her.

“She was 18 when they got married. I later moved a plea seeking quashing of the FIR, which was subsequently done, but no police assistance was provided to them,”

-Kalsy said.

Reportedly, Vinay had sustained as many as 4 bullet wounds and succumbed to it while Kiran, who was shot at least 5 times, is still in the hospital.

Landlady gives horrific account of the incident

After the attack, the neighbours were in complete shock. The landlady of the couple gave a statement wherein she claimed that she was in her house when she heard loud shots of firing. Initially the landlady thought that it was the sound of a gas cylinder explosion, and hence she rushed to check what happened.

“I went outside to check and saw Kiran running towards the terrace, and Vinay running downstairs. I immediately went inside and locked the doors. Vinay was later found dead in a narrow lane. The men who came to kill them left shortly after,”

-she further added, giving an account of the horrific tragedy.
