In a shocking incident worthy of a crime thriller film, a Delhi-based man “killed” his imaginary “twin brother” to somehow get a visa and live the American dream. The 26-year-old man from Punjab reportedly created a fictitious twin, whom he killed and then applied for visa to attend his fictitious funeral. His elaborate filmy plan was foiled thanks to the US immigration office.
Jaswinder Singh, a resident of Patiala, Punjab, was enamored by the American life and wanted to settle down in US. However, the 26-year-old had no specific way to get to the United States. To make his dreams come true, Jaswinder hatched an elaborate plot of creating an imaginary twin brother, and then killing him.
Singh forged documents that would state that he has a ‘twin’ brother who lived in US and died there. He then sought a visa to fly to US and attend the funeral. However, little did he know the amount of scrutiny he would be put under by the US embassy.
During the interview at the embassy, the officers interviewing him were obviously skeptical at the similarities in the pictures of Jaswinder Singh and his ‘twin brother’. They were also shocked seeing a letter from a funeral home, and a cremation center’s verification of death.
Jaswinder has been booked under sections pertaining to forging and impersonation.
The Facts of the Matter
For many Indians living in India, moving to US is a dream that they would go to lengths to achieve. However, there are times when some Indian citizens are so desperate to move overseas, that they make devious plans to somehow fly under the radar, and move out.

Creating ‘Twin Brother’, Then Killing him
26-year-old Jaswinder Singh, a Patiala, Punjab resident, was one such person who was so desperate to move to US, he decided to first fabricate a fake “twin brother”. He then proceeded to concoct a story of his twin brother’s death. His idea was simple, fool the embassy into granting him a visa so that he could attend the twin brother’s “funeral”.

Producing Relevant Documents to Fool Officials
While his plan did end up getting foiled, Jaswinder went to lengths to support his claim. He furnished documents to somehow convince the officers in the embassy. He first produced a letter from a funeral home in New York. He also shared a document of “cremation centre’s verification of death” and “unofficial death record abstract”, as per a TOI report.

The Confession Under Sustained Questioning
Unfortunately for Jaswinder, the trained officials at the US embassy were quick to spot his lies. They were skeptical from the get go, as the pictures of his “twin brother” Kulwinder Singh, looked eerily similar to his own pictures.
Further, they also did some background checks, and found that there was no such person by the name of Kulwinder Singh, who had lived in New York, and neither did a person with that name passed away on the mentioned date.
When confronted with the real facts, Jaswinder couldn’t sustain under the questioning, and soon spilled the secrets. He confessed that he had forged the documents of his employment, and took his friend’s help to furnish funeral letter and other documents. He also confessed of posing as a police officer, in order to get more credibility in front of the visa officials.
Jaswinder has been booked under multiple sections of IPC, including sections pertaining to fraud and impersonation.
