Education is the base of every student and it determines the future of an individual. No matter what background those students belong to, but effective education has the power to modify and shape the future of a person.

In India, since ancient times, the education system has been in the form of Gurukuls, where students were taught conventional methods of living life. Although the Gurujis used to impart the best kind of education that they could, somehow the education system faced a lot of changes. With the foreigners coming to Indian lands since the 16th century, including Portuguese, French and Britishers, education system received a lot of western touches.

Gurujis changes to Teachers, scope of studies were increased from Indian to western and global topics, Pathshalas changed to schools and classrooms and examination patterns got introduced. The Indian education system has received a lot of changes due to the British era.

However, the system had remained the same since then. It was until the advent of the 21st century that Indian schools and education system understood the need for the introduction of some modifications in this system, to yet again match the global standards. As a result, digital education became a thing in India.

Technology is everywhere around us. It has changed the way we receive medical treatments, it has affected the entertainment industry, the way we shop, our transportation system and every single thing in our daily life. Hence, education was no exception. The introduction of technology to the education system is essentially amazing because to survive and progress in a technology infected world, a person should be made ready from a very young age. Digitization of education makes students comfortable with the latest technology. But that’s for one thing.

From improvising the learning methodology to making jobs easier for the teacher, here is a list of various ways in which technology compliments the education system.

The Digital Infrastructure

It is a story of a forgotten past when the classrooms had black or green boards with conventional table and chair environment. Modern-day classrooms are being equipped with digital screens while students hold smart devices in their hands. Unlike before when the teacher used to write long notes on the board and students had to invest mind and time in noting them down in the copies, these days, the notes are in form of PDFs and presentations.

The teacher’s digital devices are in synchronization with that of students. The students can now concentrate more on studying the topic rather than worrying about copying the notes. Also, unlike older times when the students had to carry large backpacks, full of copies and books, now it is just a slim tablet or a smart device which carries all the data and study material for the students. Digital education has reformed the way a classroom looks.

Making Distance Education a Reality

Distance education, a term which would have otherwise made no sense or would just be a joke, if it weren’t for the digital element. Technology has privileged the students with the option of attaining education at the touch of buttons. With online lessons and lectures, online doubt clearing sessions, full-time online schools, colleges, tuitions, remote studies from home, remedial classes in on-campus computer labs, students can use the technology to become a digital student of a digital educational eco-system.

The elasticity of Education Pattern

Technology is flexible. It lets users modify and customize things according to their comfort. With the introduction of technology, the education system provisions the students to take lessons and study in their manner.

With the digital lessons available on the go, the teacher need not to worry about the pace of the topic. Students can go through the topics multiple times if they did not get it in the first run in class. Teachers can give customized exercises to students, online to help students perfect a particular topic. Online doubt clearing session gives teachers with the privilege to attend student’s doubts individually.

Also, with the digital screens attached in the classes, a boring lecture of the teacher can be switched to an interactive Audio-Video based session, immediately, making the classroom environment more flexible than ever.

Fieldtrips converted to Webinars

Some schools do not have the resources to conduct regular field trips. However, the digitization of classrooms has made it possible for teachers to give them exposure to international field trips just by sitting in the classrooms. The time in which students would otherwise visit only one or two fieldwork sites, now they could visualize multiple fields and that too in almost negligible cost.

Not only is this option cost and time effective, but it has increased the scope of undertaking field trips. Students could be shown videos and presentations online about the locations, industries and places which they are being taught about. Apart from this, interactive session with industry-based mentors, guest faculties, experts etc can be undertaken using video chats.

NASA provides a facility through a program where students are allowed to interact with the astronauts in the space to have an interactive session and ask queries about space and learn things. All this is undertaken over a simple video-call. These type of sessions are called web-seminars or Webinars.

AR-VR Technology

It has always been the topic of argument that Audio-Visual enables learning techniques are more effective than paper-based working. However, wouldn’t it be effective if it is taken to yet another level. Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality are no more a thing of future and are practical technologies.

They provide users with a much better audio-visual experience. Use of these technologies may not be prominent currently in the education world, but with a little more efforts of the educationists, soon these technologies will change the face of how a boring education lecture turns into an entertainment-based learning session.

AI-Technology

Artificial Intelligence is the latest hype of the technology which has inestimable significance and prospects. Introduction of AI in the education system will yield strong outputs. An interactive technology that will ease the work of a teacher in the class.

AI can undertake basic lessons of a class and will allow teachers to concentrate on major topics and personalized doubt clearing sessions with students. A school in Bengaluru, India has already introduced an AI-Robot in some of their classes which assists the teachers in teaching basic topics.

Globalised Learning Approach and Enhanced Exposure

Digital Education will enable students to increase the scope of their studies to global levels. Whilst sitting in a classroom, students can interact with other students, teachers, mentors and experts from around the world using video calls. This made learning a foreign language, getting exposure to international topics and news, global updates, latest technology and innovation as more convenient and faster.

India has one of the biggest population of students in the world. It is a place with a great number of opportunities in the world. With a large number of students moving abroad for their higher studies, it proves clear evidence that students are losing hope in the Indian education system. Government and educational institution shall take advantage of this large number of human resource available in the nation and develop a race of highly skilled professionals using the best means possible. Digital technology will stage the talent of these students at the global level and will give them exposure to international content learning.
