In the ongoing last leg of IPL 2021, Dinesh Karthik breached IPL code of conduct where his frustration left his stumps rattled. The incident happened during the qualifier 2 of IPL 2021 played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals.
The game was truly a high-stakes one with the team who would win, would survive to see another day. In the game, KKR’s Dinesh Karthik was bamboozled by Kagiso Rabada. Frustrated on his dismissal, Karthik poured his anger on the stumps, and hence, is reprimanded by the IPL committee.
For centuries, cricket has been called the gentleman’s sport. Owing to the fact that cricket came from England’s elite class, the game for its initial years remained gentlemanly. However, as the game got popular, more and more teams joined in and now, everything short of a physical brawl occurs on the field. Players at times indulge into verbal spats, fans at times create ruckus, and the code of conduct is tossed away.
Recently Indian player Dinesh Karthik was redemanded for breaching the code of conduct.
The Facts of the Matter
Experienced wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik was reprimanded by the IPL committee for breaching the code of conduct on October 13 during his match against Delhi Capital. The usually calm and composed 36-year-old got frustrated after he was bowled out on a duck.
It so happened that batting second, KKR was chasing a total of 136. At 125/3, the team was looking at the comfortable victory. However, it all changed when Kasigo Rabada bowled Dinesh Karthik out on a duck. Being so close to the victory and not scoring a single run must have clearly gotten to Karthik who poured his frustration on the stumps.
This action did not please the match officials who issued a statement after the match which read, “Karthik admitted to the Level 1 offence 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct and accepted the sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.”
KKR VS DC: A Match Straight Out of a Thrilling Screenplay
“It ain’t over, until its over”. We’ve all heard of the phrase but got the meaning of the phrase yesterday during the KKR VS DC game. The game went right down to the wire after being in KKR’s pocket for the most part of the game. By the end, KKR was left shell shocked due to DC’s return. And the verdict came in the last over of the game.
DC Begins the Inning, Batters Look Rusty
Taking to the pitch first, DC batters gave a performance that they would themselves be underwhelmed by. The team could only put a measly total of 135/5 in the most important game of the league. Opening pair of Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan never really looked comfortable and added 32 runs for the first wicket.
Stoinis Promoted to Underwhelm, Hetmyer Hits It Well
After the dismissal of Prithvi Shaw for 18, Marcus Stoinis came to bat at number 3 to give the DC side some much needed firepower. However, he too was bowled at 18 for 23 and soon Shikhar Dhawan too fell on 36 off 39.
Soon Shreyas Iyer and Shimron Hetmyer tried to steady the boat and both contributed 47 runs cumulatively for DC to reach a fightable total.
Chase Begins, KKR Goes All Guns Blazing
Chasing 136, KKR came with an intent to never let lose the sight of the game. The opening pair of Shubhman Gill and Venktesh Iyer contributed 96 runs for the first wicket in just 12 overs. Iyer played an inning to remember with 3 maximums and 4 boundaries, scoring 55 runs of 41 balls.
After Iyer’s dismissal by Rabada, Nitish Rana too looked strong and was going will till he hooked Nortje to be dismissed at 13. What followed was a collapse of nightmarish proportions. With just 13 runs more needed, 4 batsmen gave short appearances without changing the scorecard.
Collapse of Epic Proportions, 4 Ducks From KKR
First came Dinesh Karthik, who was bowled out of his senses and soon Eoin Morgan too went to the dressing room for duck.
Rahul Tripathi Seals the Deal
The equation stood at 6 runs to win in 4 balls. Shakib Al Hasan was surprised by a flat delivery from Ashwin and scored a duck. Narine came and went with a duck, with 6 runs more needed in 3 deliveries.
Rahul Tripathi finally did it for Kolkata and hit a massive six off R. Ashwin to finally seal the deal for Kolkata Knight Riders
