A major landslide occurred near Gaurikund on the Kedarnath Yatra route in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district, leaving many people feared buried in the debris of destroyed shops. The incident took place after heavy rainfall. It is estimated that between 10 and 12 people may have been buried or swept away by the landslide. A search and rescue operation has been initiated by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

SP Rudraprayag, Dr Visakha said: The landslide took place near Gaurikund last night after heavy rainfall. Three shops were damaged due to the landslide near the Gaurikund post bridge last night.

Disaster Management Officer Dalip Singh Rajwar told ANI: “The operation is going on to find the missing people”. “We got information that three shops were affected because of falling rocks and heavy rainfall…The search operation was started immediately. It was said that around 10-12 people were there but till now they have not been located.”

The following people have been named as missing: Vinod (26), Mulayam (25), Ashu (23), Priyanshu Chamola (18), Ranbir Singh (28), Amar Bohra, Anita Bohra, Radhika Bohra, Pinki Bohra, Prithvi Bohra (7), Jatil (6) and Vakil (3) by officials.

Due to the fear of potential rain-related incidents during the monsoon, fewer pilgrims are going to the Kedarnath shrine from Gaurikund, which is the base camp for the trek and has been named after Goddess Parvati.
