The dramatic visuals of the Indonesian Semeru volcano’s eruption have set the internet on fire with videos and pictures of the eruption already gone viral on Twitter. For the unversed, the Semeru volcano is the tallest volcanic mountain on Java Island, the latter, housing over 56% of the total Indonesian population. The visuals show a mountain like structure formed by the ash and fire around the Semeru volcano. So far, at least 13 people have been reported dead in the incident while hundreds of thousands of people have fled the Java Island. As a consequence of the volcano eruption, Java also witnessed heavy rains, that cooled down the debris and pushed ashy mud further down the island.
Background
No matter how advanced our technologies be in predicting weather and making decisions according to that, the true wrath of nature is always unpredictable. And back in the day when there were no warning systems, and satellite imagery, volcano eruptions were one of the biggest natural calamities in human history.
The worst and deadliest volcanic eruption came in 1815 at Tambora where the death toll of over 80,000 people was registered. Such was the intensity of the volcanic eruption that later smaller eruptions were triggered of the same volcano and seismic activities continued till 2013.
The 1883 volcanic eruption of Krakatau in Indonasia is also written in the history book for being the loudest ever eruption. On 20th May 1883 70% of the entire island was destroyed due to the volcanic eruption and the sound was heard in 50 locations across the world including Perth and Australia.
Volcano eruptions are again making all the buzz after Semeru volcano erupted earlier on Saturday.

After the eruption, a thick column like structure began forming with ash being thrown out as high as 12,200 meters in the sky. A common subsequent event after a volcanic eruption is a thunderstorm. The same happened after Semeru erupted, and finally the dome of ash and debris that was formed, was pushed to the ground.

It should be noted that Indonesia and volcanic eruptions go quite hand-in-hand. This is because the country sits between what’s known as Ring of Fire, a name for a geographic location where highest tectonic and volcanic activities are reported.
