In a concerning development that emerged from Valsad, Gujarat, a driver was burnt to death after 2 trucks collided and caught fire on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway. The accident occurred in Pardi, Valsad on the night of Monday, July 6. After the accident, fire tenders rushed to the spot to douse the fire.

Details
In a freak accident, a truck driver was charred to death post a fatal collision of two trucks on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway on July 6. Near Pardi, Valsad, a truck collided with another running truck. The collision was of such intensity that both the trucks caught fire in no time.
After the fire broke out, fire tenders were called out. The fire tenders rushed out to the location, an attempt to douse out the fire started. However, the fire was such that two more fire tenders had to be called to the NH-48.
A local officer was quoted by ANI saying-
“We received information that an accident happened on the NH-48. We called two more tenders to control the fire.”
The officer was further quoted adding, “One driver died.”

The Tainted History of Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway
NH-48 (NH-8, according to old numbering) is a national highway that starts at Delhi, terminates at Chennai and passes through Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Given is length of approximately 2,807, and given the fact that it passes through major states of country, its often known as the busiest highway of the country.
With such elaborate routes, also comes rare, but shocking accidents and mishaps that become a warning for the future travelers. Earlier this year, 2 trucks that were on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway collided in the Palghar district of Maharashtra. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the accident.

According to the PTI, the two trucks were plying from opposite directions and suffered a massive head-on collision in Vasai taluka at 3:30 Am in the night. After the collision, the two trucks caught fire. Soon the local police and fire tenders rushed to the location. After an hour or so, the fire was completely doused out.
The highway authorities later removed the remains of the charred vehicles and the traffic movement on that part of the NH-48 resumed as before.
NH-48 Highway Accidents: What the Numbers Say
According to a Ministry of Road Transport & Highways Transport Research Wing report from 2019, National Highways account for a massively disproportionate share of deaths due to accident in India. In its 2019 report, the research wing claimed that National Highways comprise to only 2.03% of the entire road network in India. However, it amounts to a shocking 35.7% deaths. Further State Highways, which account to only 3.01% of the total road length in India account for massive 24.8% of total deaths.

According to a The Hindu report, in 2016, there were 3,345 accidents on the NH-48. In these accidents, 3,727 people sustained injuries. Further, 825 cases were fatal and 878 people lost their lives. Meanwhile, in 2017, a total of 2,670 accidents were reported which left 3,074 persons sustain injury. Meanwhile, 605 fatal cases were recorded which claimed the lives of 644 persons.
