If one has to summarize last night’s events in Mumbai it would be – ‘drunk calls, bomb threat, arrest’, where Amitabh Bachchan’s bungalow, railway station bomb threat calls were proven a hoax. On August 6, the Mumbai Police were forced into a surprise bomb-threat preparedness drill when it received a call from Mumbai residents. The callers claimed that they had planted bombs at the CSMT railway station, Dadar Railway Station and actor Amitabh Bachchan’s bungalow.

After investigation, the police arrested the callers – who revealed that they were in an inebriated state, and revealed that they wanted to see how alert the Mumbai police were.

The Mumbai Police was helter-skelter after it received an anonymous call which claimed that bombs have been planted to Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan’s bungalow, at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station and at the Dadar Railway station.

Mumbai Police Receives the First Call

“Mumbai police’s main control room had received the call around 9.45 pm on Friday, in which the caller said that bombs have been placed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Byculla, Dadar railway stations and at megastar Amitabh Bachchan’s bungalow in Juhu,”

Police Swings into Action, Bomb Disposal Squad Deployed

Upon receiving the highly panic-inducing call, the Mumbai Police swung into action and subsequently initiate an investigation to zero-in on the callers. Meanwhile, it also deployed the relevant BDDS (Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad) to search the regions mentioned by the callers and even ascertain a presence of any possible explosives. The Mumbai Police also deployed Dog Squad to sniff out any otherwise untraceable threats.

“After getting the call, the Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF) along with the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), dog squads and local police personnel rushed to these locations and carried out searches,”

Heavy Security Drill in CSMT Station

At the CSMT station, which is also known in the world to be the world’s busiest railway station, the relevant offices were searched. This involved a thorough search of the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) office, parking lots and other relevant places, by the police. As CSMT involves millions of people coming together every day, the threat aversion was a priority for the police and thus, an Anti-Terrorism Squad, a Quick Response Team and others were also involved in the operation.

Police Calls back Callers – Callers Tell Police They Are Busy

Despite the thorough search, the Mumbai Police found no threats or bomb related items in and around the mentioned places. Meanwhile, when the police called back the callers, they switched off the phone after saying that they are very busy and must not be disturbed.

Police Zeros In Caller’s Location – The Truth Revealed

Later, the Mumbai Police’s Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) zeroed in on the location of the callers based on the cell-phone tower and picked up the callers. On interrogation, the revealed that they had decided to call the police “for fun” while they were celebrating ‘Gatari’. For the unversed, Gatari is a festival primarily celebrated in Maharashtra before Shravan begins. On this day, people feast on delicacies and drinks.

Much Ado About Nothing

The CIU’s official was quoted in an Hindustan Times reports saying, “Both of them are drivers. Raju Kangare, 32, and Ramesh Shrisath, 28, are residents of Dombivali. The officer further said that the accused called the police after getting drunk and to “check alertness” of the Mumbai Police.
