In a jaw-dropping revelation, the Delhi Police have cracked down on a highly organized syndicate involved in the manufacturing and sale of counterfeit cancer medicines. This heinous operation, which had been running for over two years, preyed on the vulnerability of cancer patients, putting countless lives at risk for financial gain.

The Masterminds and Their Modus Operandi

At the helm of this nefarious scheme were Viphil Jain and Neeraj Chauhan, the masterminds behind the racket. Their modus operandi was twofold: refilling used vials of genuine cancer medicines with an inexpensive anti-fungal drug called Fluconazole, and filling counterfeit vials with fake drugs, complete with counterfeit labels of reputable pharmaceutical brands.

Accomplices from Unlikely Places

The investigation revealed that the gang had accomplices from unlikely places, including two employees of a major private cancer hospital in Delhi – Komal Tiwari and Abhinav Kohli. These individuals were responsible for procuring used vials and selling them to the gang for a meager sum of ₹5,000 per vial.

A Widespread Network of Deception

The tentacles of this criminal enterprise extended far beyond the borders of Delhi and Gurugram. Neeraj Chauhan, one of the masterminds, ran a medical tourism company, exploiting the trust of foreign cancer patients seeking treatment in India. He supplied them with the counterfeit drugs, putting their lives at grave risk.

A Lucrative Trade in Suffering

The financial incentives driving this unethical trade were staggering. The gang sold each counterfeit vial for a staggering ₹1 lakh to ₹3 lakh, passing them off as genuine and costly cancer medicines from international brands. In the course of their operations, they managed to sell over 7,000 injections, amassing a fortune through their deceitful means.

The Fall of the Syndicate

The Delhi Police’s Crime Branch, acting on a tip-off, conducted simultaneous raids at multiple locations in Delhi and Gurugram, where the manufacturing and storage of the fake drugs took place. The raids led to the seizure of a substantial cache of counterfeit vials, packaging materials, and cash, as well as the arrest of the seven accused individuals.

A Lingering Threat

While the dismantling of this syndicate is a victory for law enforcement and a step towards restoring faith in the healthcare system, the investigation continues. Authorities are still on the hunt for an accomplice from Bihar, who played a crucial role in distributing the fake medicines across other states.

As the investigation unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the grave consequences of greed and the importance of stringent measures to safeguard the integrity of the pharmaceutical industry and the well-being of patients. The Delhi Police’s crackdown has brought to light a deeply concerning issue, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and harsher penalties for those who engage in such unethical practices.
