In a tragic incident, former Karnataka CM B.S. Yediyurappa’s granddaughter was found dead in her residence. So far media reports are alleging suicide as a cause of death. Authorities have so far not confirmed the cause of death as suicide and have sent her dead body for postmortem for further investigation.

30-year-old Soundarya was reportedly rushed to a private hospital when her husband found her body hanging in her bedroom. She resided at an upscale apartment near Mount Carmel College with her doctor husband. She is also survived by her six-month old child.

Background

According to National Crime Records Bureau, suicides in India shot up 10% more from 2019 to an all-time high in 2020. As many as 1,53,052 people were reported dead due to suicide in the pandemic year. Another alarming statistic emerged from the report which stated that student suicide saw the highest percentage surge with 21.20%. Meanwhile, daily wage earners made the section that lost the most number of lives due to suicides at 37,666 deaths. The pandemic, which left many daily-wage earners stranded was seen as a contributing factor for the number of suicides. It should be noted that suicides in 2020 were the highest since 1982 when suicides rose by another 11.15% from 1981.

The Facts of the Matter

Condolences started pouring in on the evening of January 28 after former Karnataka CM B.S. Yediyurappa’s granddaughter Soundarya was found dead at her residence. The 30-year-old doctor’s dead body was found hanging at her residence located near Mount Carmel, Bengaluru.

PM Modi, Finance Minister Calls Former CM

Reportedly, Prime Minister Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called the BJP-leader to condole the death. Former CM and Congress leader Siddaramaiah took to Twitter and wrote, “The demise of Dr Soundarya is a great loss to @BSYBJP’s family. My prayers with all his family members. My deepest condolences to them”

Husband Was Alerted By House Help

Reportedly, Soundarya was found hanging in her residence by her husband. Reportedly, her husband had rushed to their residence after he was alerted by the house help that Soundarya was not responding after multiple knocks on the door of their bedroom.

Her body was later taken to the Bowring hospital. According to an Indian Express report, the doctors found a mark on her neck during her autopsy. They later handed Soundarya’s body to her family.

Soundarya Was Married to Doctor, Was Bright Student

A doctor, Soundarya was married to a fellow doctor who works at M.S Ramaiah Collage. Her husband is identified Dr. Neeraj. A New Indian Express report quoted a familiar source saying, “She was a bright student and a very polite person. She was warm and unassuming with her colleagues. Dr Neeraj is also known to be humble.”

“No Doubt About It…”: Karnataka Home Minister’s Comment

According to Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, Soundarya was suffering from post-pregnancy depression. Her depression may have been a reason for the alleged suicide. “There is no doubt about it. We all knew she was battling post-pregnancy depression. Yediyurappa is really upset. Soundarya and her husband were a good couple,” the home minister was quoted saying.

Soundarya was the daughter of the former Karnataka CM’s second daughter Padmavathi and Virupakshappa Yamakanamardi. She had tied knot back in 2018 and had a baby about six-months ago. So far, no suicide note has been released by the authorities.
