2021 has been a tragic year for cricketing fraternity. After the death of former Indian cricketer Yashpal Sharma, and the demise of the oldest living cricketer John Watkins at 82, another death has rocked the world of cricket. On October 15, former Under-19 captain Avi Barot died at a young age of 29.

According to reports, Avi died due to cardiac arrest at the time the final of IPL 2021 was progressing. An Indian Express report claimed that Avi died when he was watching the match at his Ahmedabad residence. Furthermore, his death is tragic as he’s survived with a wife who’s pregnant for four months.

“Shocking, Untimely Demise: Saurashtra Cricket Association

A person who had his whole career mapped out in front of him, Avi passed away just a few days after he played an influential innings at the Reliance G-1 T20 league. The 29-year-old played an inning worth cherishing, scoring 72 runs. After his death, the Saurashtra Cricket Association issued a press release which read, “Everyone at Saurashtra Cricket Association deeply shocked and saddened on very shocking, untimely and extremely sad demise of Avi Barot, remarkable and notable Cricketer of Saurashtra. He left for heavenly abode in the evening of 15th October 2021 due to severe cardiac arrest.

“29 Years is Nothing”: Jaydev Sah

The Saurashtra Cricket Association’s President Jaydev Sah also condoled the death of the young talent. Saying that the news was “sad”, Mr. Sah said that “twenty nine age is nothing”. “I was deeply shocked to receive the news just days after he scored so many runs in Reliance G-1 tournament which he was playing after coming out of an injury,” he was quoted by an Indian Express report.

The Life and Times of Avi Barot

Avi made his debut in the Ranji Tournament playing for the Gujarat side against Delhi back in 2011. Thanks to his performance, he was selected by the authorities as the captain of the Indian Under-19 team. He made a return for the Saurashtra team in the Ranji during the Ranji Tournament during the 2016-17 season.

In his short yet exemplary career, he played 21 matches in Ranji Trophy tournament. Further, he also played 17 list A games and 11 T20 games on a domestic level. One of his best innings came during the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where he slammed 122 runs off 53 balls.
