Early Morning Collision Disrupts Operations at Thermal Power Supply Chain
In the early hours of Tuesday, a freight train collision occurred on a private railway line in Sahibganj, Jharkhand, resulting in two fatalities and four injuries. The incident, which took place at approximately 3:30 AM, involved a coal-loaded freight train colliding with a stationary empty goods train.
The collision occurred on the NTPC Lalmatia Merry Go Round (MGR) line, a private railway network operated by NTPC that connects the Kahalgaon and Farakka Thermal Power Plants. This line operates independently from Indian Railways infrastructure and management.
Casualties and Emergency Response
According to reliable reports, both train drivers lost their lives in the collision. Four other individuals, believed to be Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel who were on duty, sustained injuries in the incident.
Local emergency services responded promptly to the accident site near Barhait police station. The injured were transported to the Community Health Center in Barhait for immediate medical attention.
The impact of the collision caused a fire to break out in the engine of the coal-loaded train, adding to the severity of the incident. Eastern Railway’s Malda Division provided assistance by dispatching a 140-tonne crane from Sahibganj to help with clearing operations, demonstrating inter-agency cooperation despite the private operation of the railway line.

Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision. Initial reports suggest that human error or signal failure may have contributed to the accident, though officials caution that it is too early to draw definitive conclusions.
“The exact circumstances leading to this unfortunate incident are still being investigated,” said a local administration official who requested anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the media. “We are looking at all possible factors, including operational protocols and signaling systems.”
The investigation is complicated by the fact that the railway line is privately operated by NTPC rather than Indian Railways, meaning different operational standards and safety protocols may apply. Experts note that private railway lines sometimes operate under different safety standards than those maintained by Indian Railways.

Discrepancies in Initial Reporting
In the hours following the collision, varying casualty figures circulated across different news outlets and social media platforms. Some initial reports suggested three deaths and up to six injuries, creating confusion about the full impact of the incident.
However, more recent and detailed reports from reliable sources have consistently indicated two fatalities—both train drivers—and four injuries. This discrepancy highlights the challenges of accurate reporting in the immediate aftermath of transportation incidents, particularly those occurring in the early morning hours.

Implications for Industrial Railway Safety
This incident raises important questions about safety standards on private industrial railway lines that transport hazardous materials such as coal. While Indian Railways has been implementing advanced safety features like the Kavach anti-collision system on its network, the status of similar safety measures on private railway lines remains less clear.
The collision underscores the critical importance of maintaining rigorous safety protocols across all railway operations, regardless of whether they are operated by national or private entities.
As investigations continue, transportation safety experts anticipate that this incident may prompt renewed discussions about standardizing safety requirements across all railway operations in India, including those on private industrial lines.

Updates Expected
With the investigation still in its early stages as of 10:30 AM on April 1, authorities are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available. NTPC officials have yet to release a detailed statement on the incident or its potential impact on power plant operations.
Local residents have expressed concern about transportation safety in the region, though most acknowledge the generally good safety record of the freight operations prior to this incident.
