A 13-year-old girl was killed and four women suffered burn injuries after lightning struck a temple area in Ghaziabad’s Indirapuram during heavy rains on Friday morning.

The deceased, identified as Azmeru, was sheltering under a tree near a Hanuman temple in Makanpur village when lightning struck around 8:30am. Azmeru suffered a direct hit on her head and died on the spot as per eyewitnesses.

Women Sheltering Under Tree Injured

The injured women – Jasmeen (17), Azmeri Khatoon (35), Shaalu (40) and Shabana (30) – were rushed to a nearby hospital. Shaalu is said to be in critical condition. The women had taken shelter under the tree while heading for work as domestic helpers.

Loud Explosion Heard Before Discovery of Injuries

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion sound before discovering the injured women and Azmeru’s body. The Indirapuram police was informed by hospital authorities and have recorded statements from locals. Azmeru and the injured women are all originally from Bihar.

 

Incident Highlights Risks During Extreme Weather

The incident brings to focus the vulnerability of makeshift shelters during extreme weather events. Authorities have advised caution during lightning and thunderstorms.
