Tech giant Google reportedly paid a sum of over Rs 2 crores to a 22-year-old hacker and later confirmed the same by claiming that it is “working on correcting” the issue. The incident was brought forward by a Twitter user Self Curry, who is a self-proclaimed hacker. In his tweet, he claimed that he was paid a sum of $2.5 lakhs and reached out to Google regarding the same. He added that he didn’t receive any response from the company and quipped “it’s OK if you don’t want it back..”.

It’s been a little over 3 weeks since Google randomly sent me $249,999 and I still haven’t heard anything on the support ticket. Is there any way we could get in touch @Google? (it’s OK if you don’t want it back…)”, his tweet read.

Netizens were astounded at the glaring and shocking mistake of the tech giant. “There is no such thing randomly, every thing has a propose,” a Twitter user commented. “I hope you mind sharing with me a very small part..Im serious lol”, another Twitter user quipped.

Meanwhile, a Google spokesperson gave a statement to NPR ,“Our team recently made a payment to the wrong party as the result of human error. We appreciate that it was quickly communicated to us by the impacted partner, and we are working to correct it.

The Facts of the Matter

Imagine waking up a morning and somehow having a copious sum of wealth being transferred to your back account. Moreover, the amount is transferred to your back account by none other than one of the largest tech companies in the world.

Sam Curry, who is a self-proclaimed bug-bounty hunter and Staff Security Engineer at Yuga Labs had a similar experience. The hacker recently took to Twitter and reached out to tech firm Google directly, and sharing that the company “randomly” sent him about $2.50 lakhs.

Hacker Reaches Out to Google

“It’s been a little over 3 weeks since Google randomly sent me $249,999 and I still haven’t heard anything on the support ticket. Is there any way we could get in touch,” Sam’s tweet read. He also added a witty remark in his tweet, saying, “(it’s OK if you don’t want it back…)”.

Soon, Sam’s comments section was littered with Twitter users giving him all kinds of advices as to how to go about the solution. While some users claimed that there are no such things as mistake and everything has a purpose, others asked for a small share of the sum.

Sam Curry Works as Bug Bounty Hunter For Google

According to reports, Sam Curry is often paid by Google a “bounty” to find bugs and vulnerabilities in their software. However, Sam doesn’t believe that the $2.49 lakhs he received is related to any such work he did in past. In his interview to NPR, Sam mentioned that he will be keeping the money in his account if Google would be wanting it back.

Mistake Caused Due to “Human Error”: Google

Meanwhile, a Google spokesperson confirmed the development and admitted the mistake which it mentioned, was caused due to “human error”. “Our team recently made a payment to the wrong party as the result of human error”, the spokesperson in a statement stated.

“We appreciate that it was quickly communicated to us by the impacted partner, and we are working to correct it,” the spokesperson added.
