In a GPS fail of epic proportions, tourists in Hawaii followed GPS and ended up driving straight into the waters of Hawaiian harbors! Thankfully, the two women in question did not sustain any major injuries, and were rescued thanks to local Good Samaritans and rescue officials from a sailboat crew. Visuals of the showed a woman seated in a car, with seatbelt on, as the car plummets further down in the water.

While GPS systems have revolutionized the way we navigate the world, guiding us safely from point A to point B with just a few taps of a finger. But as anyone who’s ever blindly followed their GPS directions knows, these systems are not infallible. For two hapless tourists in Hawaii, their path took a decidedly aquatic turn.

One witness, Christie Hutchinson, was just about to dock her boat after a morning out on the water when she saw the car careening down the boat ramp and into the harbor. She captured the car’s descent on her phone, and in the video, the driver can be seen looking befuddled but not particularly alarmed by the watery turn of events.

Fortunately, the passengers were buckled into their seats and managed to escape unscathed, with witnesses helping them to safety as the car sank to the bottom of the harbor.

The Facts of the Matter

GPS technology has revolutionized the way we navigate the world around us, providing us with turn-by-turn directions and guiding us to our destinations with ease. But as anyone who’s ever blindly followed their GPS directions knows, these systems are not infallible. From wrong turns to dead ends, GPS mishaps can lead us down some unexpected path.

Two tourists recently learned how even the most advanced GPS systems can occasionally lead us astray, taking us on unexpected detours or, in extreme cases, plunging us into the depths of a harbor.

GPS System Leaves Tourists Astray

It was supposed to be a relaxing vacation in Hawaii, a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and soak up some sun. But for two tourists, their island getaway took an unexpected turn when their GPS system led them astray.

“Must’ve taken eyes off”

As they made their way to a manta ray tour in Kailua-Kona, the Dodge Caravan they were traveling in suddenly veered off course and careened straight into the Honokohau Small Boat Harbor. Witnesses at the scene were stunned by what they saw. “I think they just must’ve taken their eyes off the road for a second,” said Christie Hutchinson, who was about to haul her boat in from the harbor.

“Wasn’t supposed to happen”

As the van plunged into the water, Hutchinson whipped out her phone and began filming. In the video, which she later posted on social media, the driver seemed bemused but not particularly concerned

about the situation. Meanwhile, the passengers were trapped inside the sinking vehicle, their fate hanging in the balance. “Pretty sure that wasn’t supposed to happen,” Hutchinson can be heard saying in the video, while people around her shout at the women to get out of the vehicle.

Tourists Survive the Ordeal

Luckily, the tourists managed to escape with their lives, albeit a little soggy. Witnesses at the scene sprang into action to help the women out of the sinking van. The passenger crawled out through the windows, while Hutchinson’s husband assisted the driver in getting out of the car and the water. By the time emergency crews arrived to tow the vehicle out, it was fully submerged.

What Caused the Mishap?

So what caused this GPS mishap? According to Samantha Tavares, an information specialist for Hawaii’s Department of Transportation, these types of incidents are rare. “Usually GPS is pretty accurate in Hawaii,” she said. “It’s not exactly normal for that to happen.” Whether it was a glitch in the system or a momentary lapse in judgment on the part of the driver, one thing’s for sure: this vacation will be one the tourists won’t soon forget.
