In an incident enough to lose faith in humanity, a woman from Gwalior was forced to drink acid by her husband and is now left fighting for life in a Delhi hospital. In the heinous act, the woman’s husband and her sister-in-law were involved. The attack survivor belongs to Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.
After the woman’s brother wrote to the Delhi woman’s commission regarding the matter, committee chief Swati Maliwal met the survivor of the attack and wrote to the Gwalior authorities seeking strict action.
Trigger Warning: Physical Abuse
A 25-year-old woman from Gwalior was allegedly forced to drink acid by her husband and her sister-in-law. The woman was shifted to Delhi for further treatment and is now hanging by the thread, fighting for her life.
After the woman was shifted to Delhi, Swati Maliwal – the chief of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), went to the hospital, met the woman and her closed ones, and then further wrote to MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. In her letter, Maliwal slammed the police for not handling the case with sensitivity and called for justice for the survivor.

Police Files Weak FIR Against Accused
The Madhya Pradesh police registered the FIR on the matter on June 3. Allegedly the police omitted the provisions of acid attack laws and termed the incident as simply a case of domestic violence. On July 18, the woman was brought to Delhi for her further treatment as her condition back in Gwalior had worsened.
Survivor’s Brother Takes to Women’s Commission
Meanwhile, the survivor’s brother took to the Delhi Commission for Women’s (DCW) helpline and contacted the authorities who had the woman admitted to a hospital. As per the reports, the women’s food pipe, stomach and her intestines have been completely burnt. She is not able to drink or eat anything and has been vomiting blood frequently.
Husband Beat Survivor Up After Confrontation Regarding Affair
As of now, the DCW has had the survivor’s statement put before the sub-divisional magistrate. The statement claims that the woman found out that her husband was having an affair and on confrontation, she was beaten up. After her husband beat her up, he also made her drink acid the next morning.
“Doctors not hopeful of recovery, Wrote to MP CM”: DCW Chief
The DCW chief Maliwal and another DCW member Promila Gupta met the survivor and the former wrote a letter to Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan. In a report by Times of India, the DCW chief was quoted saying-
“It is shameful how the woman was made to consume acid by her own husband. The woman was brought to Delhi for treatment and we were terrified of seeing her condition.”
“The doctors aren’t very hopeful of her recovery because she is doing very poorly. It is a matter of shame that Madhya Pradesh police dealt with such a serious case with so much insensitivity. I’ve written a letter to CM, asking him to get the culprits arrested to ensure action is taken against eh police officers who tried to weaken the acid attack case,”
-she further said.

It should be noted that 5 days after the incident happened, the police registered a case against the accused – based on the complaint raised by the survivor’s father. However, the police omitted the provisions of acid attack laws and filed the case under the Dowry Act.
After DCW’s Intervention, Gwalior Police Updates FIR
After the action taken by the DCW chief, the police added the sections of Acid Attack and attempt to murder in the FIR. The accused in the case is booked under Section 326 A (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid, etc.) and Section 307 (Attempt to Murder).
