In a baffling incident reported from Haryana, a man was found responsible for stealing entire town’s bicycles. The police recovered as many as 62 bicycles from the man. The incident was reported from Panchkula in Haryana, and the arrest was made earlier this month.

The accused was identified as 32-year-old Ravi Kumar, a resident of Majri village. The accused is originally a resident of Meherban Harkrishna Vihar Colony in Ludhiana. As per reports, Ravi alias Varun, was responsible for almost every bicycle theft that was reported lately. After a long crime spree, he was caught thanks to CCTV footage and other technical evidences.

According to a police officer, who spoke to media being anonymous, the accused simply walked around different sectors of the city, and stole bicycles. Some of these bicycles costed as high as Rs 20,000, and the accused used to sell them for Rs 2,000 to make ends meet for his drug problem.

Earlier on September 14, he stole another bicycle worth Rs 15,000 from Sector 26, and on September 18, he was arrested and 62 bicycles were recovered from him.

As per police, the accused had been working for a private firm, and had gotten addicted to drugs which led to him being fired. To fund his drug habit, he moved to Panchkula and started stealing bicycles.

The Facts of the Matter

The Panchkula police recently arrested a bicycle thief who was reportedly responsible for stealing the entire town’s bicycles. Following the arrest, the police were able to seize as many as 62 cycles from the accused’s possession. The incident was reported from Panchkula, Haryana, and the arrest was made earlier on September 18.

The accused was identified as Ravi Kumar alias Varun. The 32-year-old accused was arrested by the police after CCTV footages were analyzed and other technical evidences also indicated that Ravi was the accused.

Accused Stole Rs 20k bicycle, Sold It for Rs 2k

As per reports, Ravi, who used to live in a rented accommodation in Majri village, used to walk around sectors in Haryana’s Panchkula, and steal bicycles at any given opportunity. He often stole bicycles worth over Rs 20,000 and used to sell them for Rs 2,000 to make ends meet for his drug habit.

The accused stole several bicycles from sectors that include 2, 4, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 12A, 20, 21, 25 & 26.

How the Bicycle Thief was Arrested

Following a complaint, the police started checking CCTV footages and found a person entering houses and fleeing with expensive bicycles. The suspect was soon identified and arrested. Sector 26, was where the accused stole the last bicycle worth Rs 15,000.

Accused was Hooked on Drugs, Stole Bicycle to Sustain Habit

Sector 26 crime branch in-charge Mohinder Singh was quoted in a Hindustan Times report saying, “Ravi had shifted from Ludhiana to Raipur Khurd, Chandigarh, in 2021. He started working at a private firm in Zirakpur.”

Because of his drug habit, the accused was let go of his job and he started a spree of bicycle thefts to sustain his drug habit.

400 Nuts-Bolts Stolen from Bridge in Haryana

The incident comes just weeks after another bizarre incident of theft was reported from Haryana. Unidentified miscreants reportedly stole as many as 400 nuts and bolts from a bridge on Saharanpur-Panchkula NH-344.

The theft came to light after an authority engineer during inspection found hundreds of nuts and bolts missing from the bridge.
