The Himachal Landslide raised alarm in the city as a video surfaced which showed 9 tourists being killed by boulders falling from hill. The horrific cataclysm comes after various reports of several people killed by landslide in Maharashtra had appeared just last week.
As the monsoon is settling itself for the next few months in the country, flooding, landslide and subsequent deaths will be getting common, if not ideal.

Monsoon has been considered a lifeline for the country for centuries. However, recently, the wrath of nature has wreaked havoc in many places across the northern India. From the Maharashtra landslide tragedy in the Raigad area which killed several and uprooted hundreds, to the Himachal cloudburst that was responsible for intense flashfloods, several regions of the country are facing the wrath of the nature it takes for granted.
Heavy Rains Triggered Landslides
In one such incident, as many as 9 people were killed while 3 were injured in a landslide at the Sangla-Chitkul road in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh on July 25, Sunday. The cause of the landslides was the heavy rainfall which the city has been seeing lately. With the triggered landslide, 9 tourists were caught caught between a rock and a hard place, quite literally.
It happened so, that a landslide was triggered, due to which heavy and large boulders rolled down from the top of a hill and were flung on several cars and houses below the hill. Boulders also fell on a tempo traveler which was ferrying tourists. This tempo was carrying 11 people – the driver included.

Dramatic footage of the incident shows people on the other side of a hilltop, separated by a seemingly strong bridge. The people point towards rocks rolling down the hill in an unprecedented speed. The first few boulders give an idea of their impact the people were about to witness.
Soon, the people take shelter inside their homes and keep recording the ordeal from the window. Soon the boulders start falling in the river below the river and huge splatter is witnessed. Out of nowhere, a seemingly small looking boulder is flung from the hill and hits the center of the bridge – completely destroying it from the middle.

8 Tourists Dead On-Spot, 1 On Way to Hospital
In the incident, 8 tourists were killed on the spot while one other tourist took his last breath when on their way to the hospital. After investigation, it was ascertained that the tourists were not part of a family and their identities were ascertained.
People identified so far are – Maya Devi Biyani, her son Anurag Biyani, her daughter Richa Biyani, Pratiksha Patil, Deepa Sharma, Amogh Bapat, Satish Katakbar, Umrao Singh, Kumar Ulhas Vedpathak.

Amogh Bapat and Satish Katabkar were friends. While Amogh was a lieutenant with Indian Navy, Katakbar was his childhood friend with home he went to Himachal. Deepa Sharma was an ayurvedic doctor and had taken the trip by booking it with a travel agency. An active user or Twitter, Deepa had shared a tweet just an hour before the tragedy struck.

Maya Biyani, and her son-daughter duo Anurag and Richa, had taken from Sikar to Delhi before making their way to Himachal Pradesh.

PM Modi Announces Ex-Gratia
After the tragedy befell on all the tourists, the Indian Prime Minister took to Twitter and expressed his condolences. He also announced ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs for the next of kin of those dead in the incident.
“An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in an accident in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. Rs 50,000 would be given to the injured,” PM Modi’s tweet read.
