Trigger Warning: Assault

In a shocking incident, a pregnant forest officer was brutally beaten up by a Satara couple. After the horrific video of incident was released on Twitter, the accused were arrested. The accused was identified as Ramchandra Jankar and his wife Pratibha Jankar. Ramchandra Jankar was the former sarpanch of the Palsawade village. The victim of the manhandling was identified as Sindhu Sanap, who is reportedly three-months pregnant. After the video of the incident was released, Maharashtra Enviornment Minister Aaditya Thackeray claimed that the accused will face strict actions and that such acts will not be tolerated. An India Today report claimed that the accused was angry that the forest officer took forest labourers without his permission for some job.

The Facts of the Matter

Forest officers and rangers are uniquely qualified and uniquely cursed for their profession. While their academic training, and on-site training make them uniquely qualified to tackle situations in forests, and compile data for policy formation. On the flip side, due to their profession, they are also demonized by people living in villages who may see them as a threat. Recently, a pregnant forest guard suffered the consequences of being at the wrong place, at the wrong time, amid wrong persons.

Video Shows Horrific Attack on Pregnant Forest Officer

The on-duty forest guard was brutally hit by the former sarpanch of the Palsawade village along with his wife in Satara district. Horrific visuals have emerged in which the man can be seen rolling around, kicking the on-guard officer. The officer’s legs are grabbed tightly by the wife of the accused and the officer tries to free herself by kicking her and shoving her. The video of the incident was shared by Indian Forest Service officer Praveen Angusamy.

Later an FIR was filed against the both the accused and they were arrested by the Satara police on Thursday morning. Reportedly, the accused had also allegedly hit the husband of the forest guard Suryaji Thombare when they were conducting a Tiger census.

Accused Arrested, Aaditya Thackeray Announces Strict Punishment

The case has been booked under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code. This includes, Section 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), Section 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), Section 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and section 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation).

Maharashtra Ministery of Environment minister Aaditya Thackeray took to Twitter and wrote, “The accused has been arrested this morning and will face the law at its strictest. Such acts will not be tolerated.”

“They Used to Threaten Us and Ask for Money”: Victim Alleges

After the incident, a Times of India report quoted the victim Sindhu Sanap saying, “Since the day I joined there, they (Jankar) used to threaten us and ask for money. I used to oppose them and not let them take monetary benefits of the works getting carried in the area. The work for Tiger census started from last three days and when we started with the work, they (Jankar) objected for carrying the work in the area. On Wednesday, when I was returning back after work, they attacked me.”
