Gitanjali Datta, a woman from Maniabanda in Cuttack district, attempted to falsely claim compensation cash from the Odisha government and Railways for her husband’s “fake” death in the Balasore train accident that occurred on June 2. Upon verification of documents, her claim was found to be false and police let her go after giving her a warning. However, she is now in trouble after her husband filed a complaint at Maniabandha police station and Gitanjali has thus gone into hiding out of fear of arrest.

The Coromandel Express crashed into a stationary goods train that same night, causing 288 deaths and more than 1,200 injuries. The Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik declared an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the deceased, while the Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh and the Railway Ministry declared Rs 10 lakh compensation to the families of those who died.

Gitanjali’s husband is now demanding that police take severe action against her for attempting to take advantage of public money and foolingly staging her husband’s demise.

The Maniabanda police station in-charge Basant Kumar Satpathy has asked Gitanjali’s husband to lodge a complaint at Bahanaga police station in Balasore district as the incident took place there.
